@Dustyfeathers ,
You have raised a very valid issue which is loudly amplified every time a Greek organization performs another stupid, immature act.
When at WPI, I was a PGD brother. When admitted to college, I was convinced that fraternities were a bad idea. While running cross-country my mind was changed by the caliber and perspective of my fellow runners from PGD. What I actually experienced was an eye opener! The support was real and largely mature. My family went through divorce (a rarer event in those days) and my brothers supported me. When brothers got out of line, it was discussed in those “secret” meetings. They were my family. Meantime PGD chapters went out of business at MIT, Brown, Dartmouth, U of Maine et al in the Northeast. Years have passed and they still know how to manage themselves (most of the time). Two other fraternities have gone out of business over the years and one was for good reasons. They were into their pot during the era of Vietnam protests. The PGD house was almost on campus and when packaged with meals, it was a less expensive housing option.
For more current information on sororities see https://www.wpi.edu/news/worcester-polytechnic-institute-sororities-receive-national-acclaim. The entire sorority system at WPI keeps winning national awards A minority join at 44+%. A good sorority can function as your family and be there when you need them.
