I've applied and been accepted into York University and University of Alberta's undergraduate Political Science program. I will most likely be also accepted into University of Victoria's political science program.

I'm currently finding it difficult to decide between these 3 universities and would really appreciate some comments on the following

1) Reputation/Quality of their Political Science programs
2) General international & Canadian reputation of the Universities
3) Location of the University (see below)

Edmonton
What kind of place is Edmonton, Alberta? Visited some tourist promo websites but I couldn't get a real feel for the place .. any comments from people who visited or lived in Edmonton would be great.

Vancouver Island
It seems a really scenic place and the weather is reputed to be great. What's the place like? How long does it take to go from the island to downtown Vancouver? Heard its a 2 hr ferry trip.

North York, Toronto
I've been told that it's around an hour away from downtown Toronto by subway.. anyone can verify this? What's the neighbourhood around York University like?

Any other comments or advice would be awesome. Thanks!

York University is NOT well renowned at all in Canada except for a few graduate programs like Law and Business and fine arts in undergrad. I would avoid it especially since it's quite far from downtown, more like 45 minutes by bus and then subway. The campus is huge, and you would mostly party on campus. Alberta is like the Texas of Canada, politically right well as right as Canadians get anyway. But Alberta the whole province is a bore. Alberta is a fine school but you'll be bored as heck after a few months. Victoria is a fine school located on a beautiful island. Hands down I would choose this school in a pinch. Hope that helps.

York is possibly the worst University out there (except its schullich program, which is also now decaying). do everything you can to avoid the school, and it is far from downtown, 2hrs by public transit, 45min drive

Don't know much about the school, but I've spent some time in Victoria and it's a fabulous place. Stunningly beautiful scenery, good weather, and plenty to do.

York does seem to have a dubious reputation but I'm considering it because it's in Toronto and I'm pretty much a big city person. Would have tried for U of T but unfortunately my application was over the deadline and they wouldn't accept it. I was thinking of going to York and transferring to U of T in the second year.. any thoughts on that?

On the west coast my original choice was UBC but didn't get to apply in time due to some complications so I've tried out for UVic, which I thought was in a really beautiful location. Only concerns is that it's too much of a rustic area with nothing to do. Am also thinking of transferring from UVic to UBC in the 2nd year but that will depend.

Edmonton, Alberta seems fairly urban while not being a big city. I'm pretty much neutral about Univ of Alberta, though it does seem like a fine school..

It may be hard transferring from York to U of T. I known people who have tried but were told that York wasn't up to U of T standards by U of t's admissions office. This of course is not saying that isn't uncommon either, it's just more common the other way around. People who can't cut it at U of T head to York.
