Picture in the application

Why do UPenn and Georgetown do this?

what is the purpose? it seems kind of stupid

For lack of a better answer, it allows the readers to personalize the files. Are they mandatory or just suggested? If you have a problem with it, then omit doing it. As a matter of fact, some religions forbid photos. Don't sweat it.

Just a tradition. As one adcom put it, it is to remind the reviewers that behind each application file there is a live human being.

Columbia does as well.

mmmm.....may be to make sure that the applicant isn't too hard on the eye!!

i was on tour in SF and the tour guide seemed to talk about berkeley and stanford being on the same level. the only difference is that during stanford interviews, if they notice you're bad looking, it'll be a disadvantage. so he says the nicer looking go to stanford and the..others..go to berkeley.
not a reliable guy though! haha, just thought i might share this..

I think its ridiculous for colleges to ask for pictures...like come on..how will that influence decisions unless your not good looking.

One word for those concerned about their picture: Photoshop ;)

Pomona asked for one. But if you apply online then there is no way to insert it.

Columbia asked for one. xD I put in a nice picture of me. I wanted to put one of me in my cute dress with Nathaniel in my lap, but I wanted to submit soon and didn't have the time. But yeah, if it asks for a picture, photoshop. >_> Maybe they'll take into considertation you look pretty good in the picture?

In my Georgetown and Columbia picture I'm wearing these slightly large black heart sunglasses that are sort of silly, but I generally have a face well suited to sun glasses. Maybe that's why Georgetown accepted me. I can't think of any other reason they would.

its a conspiracy. the schools are trying to weed out all the ugly and awkward looking kids

I remember my friend who graduated from Swat and she told me that over her class had perfect SAT scores, but the were also Top 5 ugliest universities, meaning that the ugly people go there. HAHAHA

You guys don't know? There is totally attractively AA.

Hot is the new black.

No, no. The real reason is to weed out the psychos. If you're wearing a eye liner and have a Brittney Spears poster on your wall, you're definitely not getting in. xDDD

"Leave Brittney aloooone!"

is it okay if i send in my picture after application deadline? like maybe a week or two later?

I would say not to do it. The application has probably already started being processed.

lolz, judging a book by its cover......

It weirs me out, but HEY! All you good looking people (including me) be happy. It might actually help you!

This is a vestige of the old days when the admissions committee wanted to know what ethnic group you were a member of. They did not want to take someone who was jewish( and looked jewish)and did not have a jewish last name. It was also good in eliminating african-americans before affirmative action. I do not see why the colleges still ask for it.
