*Colleges: *
Columbia- Applying there ED, First choice.
MIT (reach)
Carnegie Mellon
Cornell
UChicago
UCONN (safety)
NYU
Upenn (not wharton, just Upenn)
Berkley

Final Notes/Information:
- Thanks for the chance (I know this is a long post…)! I would appreciate if you would say why you said what you said.
- I hope I did not simply have a laundry list of EC’s, I think I have focused on 3-4 major places (Science, Math, Table Tennis, Community Service). I am not including all the other things I have participated in or done since they are not my passion.
-I am hoping to play Table Tennis for a College…
-Random fact: Qualified for MENSA

Btw, will chance back if you leave a link.

I’d say this looks pretty solid. Your grades/test scores could probably be a little higher, but it seems like you’ve made clear what your priorities are and have excelled there (5 in BC Calc etc.).

Write a good essay and I’d say you definitely have a shot at Columbia and the other schools on your list. There don’t seem to be any glaring factors that will detract from your app.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/933065-chance-me-please.html

Columbia- Applying there ED, First choice. - High Match/ low reach
MIT (reach) - Crapshoot
Carnegie Mellon - Match
Cornell - Match/High Match
UChicago - High Match
UCONN (safety) - your safety
NYU - low match/match
Upenn (not wharton, just Upenn) - high match / low reach
Berkley - OOS, high match / low reach

A 33 on the ACT is better than a 2110 on the SAT. I’d retake the SAT first over the ACT.

Ok. Thanks guys! I think it said a 33 is a 2220 SAT. Should I only submit my ACT score? It seems I am a lot better at ACT than SAT. I took SAT twice and got a 2110 but only took ACT once.

I don’t think it would hurt to submit both, but it would probably be easier to raise your SAT than your ACT. A 33 (I believe) is between a 2200 and 2300. They also wouldn’t penalize you if you only submit one / only take one (though this is rare now).

Hey! So I’m pretty sure we’re actually twins…I’m 15 and I’m applying ED to Columbia and qualified for mensa too. XD I’m a sophomore though. And there’s whole thing with you being amazing at science…Intel and Siemens are serious stuff. Winning those would be awesome.

If you can get a 33 on the ACT you can probably get at least 2200 on the SAT, and I feel like people take the SAT more seriously, probably because more students take it. Then again, if you take it a third time and don’t improve much…well. 2160 isn’t bad, but if you’re going to take it, make sure you study hard and ace it.

Rigor of curriculum, grades, APs, etc are fine. Self studies are good too.

You do have a fair amount of ECs (all of which are awesome, btw). You should list all of them if there’s room, but I’d emphasize science and table tennis the most. Science because it seems like it’s your strongest academically (all your research projects sound phenomenal–you should probably include at least one of them as supplementary material) and table tennis because it seems quirky and unique.

okay, chances:
Columbia-pretty good
MIT-reach
Carnegie Mellon-decent
UChicago-pretty good

I don’t know enough about the other schools on your list, but your application looks strong.

I have to disagree with synny201’s identification of Columbia as a high match – it’s definitely true that you’re a strong applicant, but Columbia is arguably the next hardest Ivy to get into after HYP and even good ECs, and steller test scores/GPA won’t guarantee you admission. Still, you stand a good chance, especially since you plan on applying ED. Good luck!

Thanks to both swims. I also felt the same way about synny’s assessment of my chance. Thanks for confirming.

@swimgeek: Haha that would be funny if we were twins. Thanks for the chance.

@all- Do I have enough leadership positions? I feel like I am somewhat lacking in that area (Captains don’t really sound as impressive as a VP or secretary or something like that).
Leadership positions included in EC list:
Captain Of B Science Quiz Bowl Team (11)
Captain of A Team Next year (12)
Co Captain of Chess Team (10,11,12)
President of Table Tennis Club (started club in 9,10,11,12)
Head Tech Crew Manager for invASIAN program (11)
Liaison for BB/BS (12)

Financial Aid: Current income is 30-40k per year. However, surprisingly enough, no need for Financial Aid. My mom works part time now while my dad does nothing at home because he has gotten lazy…(used to make 200k+ an year, no job for 5 months). Do colleges take this into consideration?

120 views…3 replies? :(

Bump!

Your science and math EC’s are wonderful! Honestly, I would just focus on those, in addition to table tennis <– very unique!

Wow… you skipped a grade - might add something to your app.

Subject tests are fantastic… SAT I’s are good - maybe retake 'em? 2200 would be awesome.

Like me own, GPA is pretty good, but it will lower our chances :/

Good luck!

*my own. :P

haha oops… I sound like a pirate.

Possible hook for college? hahah.

Hahah, good one:D

Columbia- 40%
MIT (reach) 15%
Carnegie Mellon 50%
Cornell 50%
UChicago 20%
UCONN (safety) 99%
NYU 70%
Upenn (not wharton, just Upenn) 30%
Berkley 50%

Do these percentages have any semblance of reality? -.-
How the hell do I have a higher chance of getting into Columbia/Cornell then I do for UChicago. lol?

RoughAnswer does not provide reasoning for his %'s, nor does he have any basis other than his intuition.

The basis for my intuition is experience.

UChicago is a quirky school, and embraces that aspect. You don’t seem “weird” enough.

Berkeley is crazy as well. And I know admissions there are not soley based on academic merit. You have to show that you aren’t just a machine that can crank out good grades. Show that you can actually think if that makes sense
