Hmm thats pretty weird.

wow ck15688, I wonder if the nursing program is especially hard to get into...I'm sure with those solid stats you will find a college to suit you

Wow from me, too. I can't believe you didn't gain admission :(
Perhaps spikemom is right about nursing being especially difficult. I know students with excellent records who couldn't get into pharmacy school. Maybe you can take classes and reapply next year? This might be especially helpful if you need some particular kinds of classes. You should find out from the nursing school what your deficiencies were (like need more math, different science, some foreign language, etc).

Yeah the Pitt nursing program is pretty highly ranked...& I have pretty strong math & science grades but they have pretty limited enrollment I think & I applied a bit late. But whatever, I am probably going to go to Ohio State, which I like better anyways!

It's good to have a plan! Good luck at Ohio State!

Yeah most Pitt Students intern at UPMC which is a huge hospital in the city that is highly ranked so they try to get the best of the best. You could go into their arts and sciences program and see if you can transfer over though, but since you're going to Ohio State then you're good. Have fun!

I guess I'll post on here too.
I applied in early Jan and i got my acceptance this past weekend, waiting for honors and hopefully full tuition. If i get full tuition then im almost positively going to pitt, so cross your fingers :-)

STATS

SATS- 760 math 670 verbal 720 writing

SAT 2's- 720 math 2 690 bio literature too low to list haha (550 :-( im a better writer and i cant do the hey pick the best non wrong answer )

GPA- 3.8 UW 4.61 W, ranked 22 out of 780 or something. top 4% of hardcore high school haha. Almost all my classes have been Honors and AP (im taking 6 AP classes this year out of a total of 7 classes).

Extra Currics- Med scholars- Only 3 students from my entire senior class were picked. We attend seminars and lectures with doctors, visit hospital wards and other cool stuff. Almost like shadowing but better and more competitive.
ER Volunteer 4 hrs a week since 11th grade
President of Math Mentors (tutoring club)
Secretary of MorningStar (volunteer club)
Project Manager for National Honor Society.
Tennis Team since 10th grade
Jr. Firefighter at an all volunteer company.
Other volunteer stuff, the above is quite enough though haha.

Hook- I lived in india for 11 years, so i talked about the differences in education and life in the US and in India and how i took advantage of all my opportunities.

I got deferred from my Early Action (university of Chicago), but I like pitt as i know they have awesome opportunities for the sciences. I'm really hoping that my application wasn't too late because i'd love that full tuition scholarship :-) ( and to go to pitt if that happens of course).
Good luck to everyone else who's waiting for decisions, UHC info, and scholarships :-)

I got some kind of scholarship..some letter came from guaranteed admission to med school (although I am not interested)..it mentioned you are a scholarship recipient..I am guessing the offer will come in a couple of weeks.

ridethecliche

Congrats! Hope you go to pitt...i bet you'll get full tuition.
What major are u looking at?

I want to double major in biochem and econ (possibly econ with mathematical modeling) or biology and econ (same thing). I applied as a pre-med major though because i wanted to see if i got the guaranteed admission to med school thing. I doubt i'll get that though because i read on their website somewhere that the SAT cutoff is 1450 and i got a 1430. Oh well. I'm already young for my grade (turning 17 just before i graduate) , so im in no rush to do accelerated programs for medicine. I love to learn, and i'd rather be a free soul during undergrad so i don't miss out on the opportunity to fall in love with some other major or course of life. I like neuroscience, especially because its science with a big touch of philosophy and i can see myself already gravitating towards that :-). Not undecided completely, but i'm open to future inspiration.

Variety is the spice of life hehe.

I got guaranteed acceptance to the med school although I shall study engineering...

Hey there's nothing wrong with that. A lot of engineers decide that they want to go into medicine, and being an engineering major prepares you really well for med school. I'd say you should stick around and see how everything goes (if you go to pitt), or you can give em a call and ask about guaranteed admission to their engineering grad school (i think they have a good one) since you want to major in engineering and not pre med. Congrats btw, thats awesome i hope i get something too :-)

I hope you get in too mate :). So if I get a BS in engineering can I still do med? I am not really interested in med that much, cuz I don't like bio., but that may change. Are the credit requirements for pre med similar to engineering? If I want that admission I gotta go down to Pittsburgh soon and do an interview :*(

w1cked:
so when are you going to do the interview...i called and they are so inflexible about their dates.

There's a few basic courses you need in order to prep you for the MCAT. A little bit of bio (yucky for you), but other than that its chem and physics :-)
I'm not sure how their guaranteed admission works, it could be that you must have over a certain gpa and MCAT, anywho, it's not a bad option to keep open. And Bio get's really interesting once you get past the memorization stuff, and you can be a math major and still be premed which shows you how flexible the entire program is :-)

Ok I am gonna call them up as soon as I get a couple minutes free. I hope I can schedule this over winter break..And, bio is yucky :(. Oh ya, I gotta maintain a 3.7 avg (I think thats a 92). Thats gonna be hard in college I think. Anyway, can someone tell me how long does it take to become a doctor?

Pitt is a 8 year program; ie four for undergrad and four for med school. Then there is the internship, typically three years and then, if you want to get a fellowship, you can. It is a long haul. And yes, the 3.7 is a difficult GPA to maintain in college.
I talked to them. They said they would probably interview 65 to 75 students and pick only 5 for the guaranteed medical admission. So the odds are kinda low I think.

You'll still get pretty good scholarship for being selected to interview though. I WANT MY PAPERS!!!

set up my interview for UPMC today.... I was allowed to do this even though I am going to the engineering school... any other engineering majors taking advantage of the guaranteed acceptance to med school?... 5 out of 75? hmmm... that's a little intimidating...

Yea, my D is an engg major, but still got the med school letter.
