Pitt FAQs

Glad you like it! Who can anyone not be a Sox fan?

Meant to write: “How can anyone not be a Sox fan?” as a reply to an earlier post. (Sorry - I don’t know how to edit a post or else I would correct my typo.)

quote=varitek33

You can only edit posts in the first 30 minutes after you make them (I believe…it’s either 30 minutes or 1 hour). There’s a little button at the bottom right side of your post that would say “Edit” that you can click. After that time frame, though, you can’t make changes. :)

Hi! Is there a general personality within the student body? Like, is there a social group that is more prevalent than the rest?

One of the great things about Pitt is that I don’t think there is! Greek life is only 10% of the student body, sports (while exciting to the students) are not of the highest concern to everyone, and other groups are varied and just as large.

The best way I could describe the student body is: Moderately Chill and high in school spirit. On a given day of the week, you will see kids dressed sloppy (sweatpants half tucked into Uggs that need a wash), normal (jeans and a shirt), and very nice (all dolled up). But I’d say there’s a good mix of all of that (thus, moderately chill). Especially with the recent string of bomb threats, the campus has come together as a whole to honor the Police, and the University on the way the threats have been handled. People (especially students) are prouder than ever to be part of the Pitt community.

So, in closing, no one group dominates the campus atmosphere. Pitt is just a big, friendly community of diverse individuals.

How early is too late?
D intending to apply to school of nursing in August '12, though HS won’t be able to provide transcripts and school profile until late September. Will this negate D ability to make rolling admissions for school of nursing? Will speak to Pitt Admissions office but wanted to hear from all of you first.

Son applied when we visited in the summer (July 2011). If you applied when you visited they waived the application fee. There was actually a code to do it online also. I’m sure they will probably do the same thing this summer.

I’m assuming you mean that she is applying this upcoming August for admission NEXT August. There’s no “deadline” for the rolling admissions, that’s why it’s rolling. Applying in August and having everything else from the school in by September should be totally fine. In my opinion, anything in before halfway through October qualifies as pretty darn early, since the first acceptances don’t go out until October anyway.

This might be crazy but is it true that in the neuroscience major, students are required to maintain a overall GPA of 3.50!? and 3.50 in neuroscience major.

Lets see if I’ve got this right. This means in order to graduate, students need to have a cumulative GPA of 3.50, and GPA of 3.50 for each neuroscience major?

I read that from here
Source: [Degree Requirements | Department of Neuroscience | University of Pittsburgh](http://www.neuroscience.pitt.edu/programs/undergraduate/degree-requirements.php)

mrsmile10, No, that is only referring to receiving departmental honors from the Department of Neuroscience. Departmental honors are different than Honors College or general Dietrich School requirements.

We received the summer visit brochure and they will waive the application fee if you apply during the visit. They say to bring a copy of your high school transcript and bring your official SAT/ACT reports or arrange to have them sent no later than October 12, 2012.

…I’ve got to learn to read. My bad. sorry everyone for the surprise :P

Does anyone know if Pitt will have Apple and/or Dell on campus selling computers during PittStart? I know Pitt refers you to the vendor site for discounted pricing but some also do have vendors on campus for summer orientation type sessions. Also everything I’ve seen says there is no preference for PC over Mac is this true and does it depend on the major? My son is undecided Arts & Science.

They haven’t in the past, and I don’t think they will now. If you want to buy a computer while you’re here, there is an Apple store in Shadyside and a Best Buy/Office Depot down at the Waterfront where you can buy a computer.

For Arts&Science there is no preference, HOWEVER, if he is going to take any sort of programming or engineering class (or even some math classes-- like DiffEq), the programs that you need to install on your computer only work with PCs. So if he were to have a Mac, he would have to partition his hard drive, or do his HW for those classes in a computer lab.

Are incoming freshmen allowed to register for classes before PIttStart? Or do they have to wait until then? My D is signed up for the PittStart August 20-21, right before classes begin. I am worried that she won’t be able to get the classes she wants at that late date. Also, from what I have read, if she wants a film class at Pitt Filmmakers, she has to sign a list or something ahead of time? When would that be- now? or in August? Thanks! (And thank you for all of your help to students and parents on this thread! Good luck in your future endeavors, Awesome!)

The advantage to the late PittStart is that the kids get to move in early. However, I do think that is when they register. Class sections have space set aside for each PittStart. For the very latest sections, be sure to have lots of options.

No Pitt student can register for the next term before meeting with their advisor, and for freshmen, yes, that is at Pitt Start. Like MD Mom said, they hold spots in some important classes. For instance, even though I had an early Pitt start I didn’t decide until August that I wanted to take biology and reg calc instead of honors, both large freshmen classes, and they were still open. I think the hardest thing for freshmen to get into are the easy gen ed classes because upper classmen take them too, so be flexible on those.

The nice thing is that the big ones (chem, bio, etc.) will still have spaces in August, and the small ones that don’t you can take later anyway (assuming you are A&S). And for engineering, the classes will already be picked for you.

Thanks, that it great to hear! I will make sure she has several choices in mind. It’s good to know she won’t be left out because of the late PittStart. It’s really the only option for her because she is coming from so far away.

I will be a Pitt freshman starting in the Fall 2012 semester. I have been offered Honors Housing at Brackenridge. I was thinking about Holland before - can you help me choose between the two, and let me know if Brackenridge is good for a freshman?
