Pitt FAQs

Got it. Thanks for your help!

I know I might not be fit for honors courses, but I’m really curious. How does one go about registering for honors courses?

I heard that Towers bathrooms are co-ed. Is this true…? I thought that the floors were single-gender, so how could the bathrooms be co-ed?

^No it’s not true. The towers bathrooms all have urinals, so maybe that what you heard but no, they are single gender depending on the gender staying on the floor.

What does the application look like and when is it released? Do we have to write an essay, if so what are the topics? Also, is there another application for the honors college, and what is that one like?

Here is the paper application:

Hi all,

How does one go about filling out an address in this allegheny county assessment?
[Allegheny County Assessment](http://www2.county.allegheny.pa.us/RealEstate/Search.aspx)

the address is “3400 Iowa st pittsburgh 15219” by the way

If you are automatically UHC eligible (incoming freshman need a 1400 SAT or 32 ACT, sophomores and higher just need a 3.25+GPA) you can just tell your advisor that’s what you want to take/sign up for the class.

If you are not automatically eligible, then just tell your advisor you would like to, and you may need to contact UHC and ask for a permission number to take the class, which they will provide to you.

MTnest gave a link to it. It’s a pretty normal application (name, contact info, high school, etc.) and you’ll have to mail in your HS Transcript.

You don’t have to, but I suggest sending one in, especially if you want to be considered for scholarships. You can write about ANYTHING you want (a hobby, an experience, etc. I’d avoid “Why Pitt” if you can help it, because that’s overdone IMO).

No, they just look at your application to see if you’re eligible (a combination of HS Rank and SAT/ACT score).

Hi, I’m sure you get this a lot… So I apologize, but, chances?

From PA
GPA (UW): 3.8
SATs: 1360, 1970
A few APs (small HS)
NHS, Spanish club, Track, blah blah blah
I’m Asian, haha.
Indicated pre-med

Thanks, it’s appreciated!

You most likely won’t get any scholarship, since you’re from PA and although your GPA is pretty good, your SAT is on the low side (i.e. not UHC eligible). I’d say you’ll definitely get in, and it definitely helps that you’re Asian, hah.

The pre-med thing doesn’t really matter since it’s not a major (is there even a place to put that on your application?).

are you kidding about how being asian is a boost? I know pitt isn’t really diverse but still…

if i’m asian and have a 2330 and 1560 does that mean i have a really good chance at getting full tuition even if my rank will probably be bad (15%)? I’ll be applying really early to ssoe

I’m from nj.

Um no. Pitt is less than 5% Asian, TOTAL. That includes Indians and Eastern Asian/Oriental Ethnicities combined. That’s tiny. So yeah, being Asian helps boost the diversity. As does basically ANYTHING that isn’t Caucasian.

I’d definitely think so. I mean, the UW GPA does play a lot, I think at least a 3.75+ is needed in combo with >1400 SAT. Apparently the rumor mill this year said a 1500-1550 SAT was needed to get a scholarship, so the 1560 is on track for that.

Major/School within Pitt is also a factor. SSOE has a lot of additional money from alumni, so we have a LOT more Full tuition/half tuition/book scholarships. I know Nursing has some alumni-based scholarships too.

It also depends on the state you are applying from. Pitt loves it’s OOS students, so it will be easier to get a full-tuition as OOS than it will be for IS. But definitely apply early (summer or September) and you should be good.

awesome thanks a lot for the reply. i’d definitely go if i got full tuition plus engineering scholarships

Hey! Umm, does Pitt have a big curve or any kind of deflation in classes? Like is it super cut throat cause only so many A’s are available?
Aaaand, by chance, do you know what the average gpa is upon graduating?
Thanks a bunch!

Apply early! I think if you do you have a great chance!

Some classes, like Bio 1, are graded on a curve (i.e. a certain number of A’s, B’s, etc.) As you get higher up, the curve becomes easier (i.e. more grades at the top end of the curve/a bigger boost for the class). I will also say in Engineering, past the 1st year pre-reqs (Calc, Chem, Physics) there isn’t a pre-set number of grades.

Heck no. That depends on the department/major. You should contact them directly. And like I said, that number is gonna be varied because after 1st year for the most part, the grades are earned, not assigned (i.e. there aren’t a preset number of grades decided upon ahead of time. If everyone does well–all A’s, if someone does poorly-- C or D).

Hi! I’m an Asian male from out of state who will be applying to the University of Pittsburgh this fall. I was wondering if you could explain a bit about my chances for the Honors College and receiving financial aid. How does the UHC function? Do you have classes of all honors college kids? What are the requirements for graduation? Are there any additional scholarships? In regards to financial aid, is there a minimal cut off for full tuition? full room and board? etc. or is it holistically gifted aid? Do you mind chancing me for admission? Thanks for your input and I’m actually really excited to visit the UoP :D

Beavisionary, do take the SAT again because the nice full tuition scholarships do use those scores. I do not think you will have any trouble being admitted, but to get merit money, you probably need a little higher scores. In the past couple of years, the scholarships seem to be going to students with 1400+ CR/M.

Being from Arizona is an advantage because Pitt does seek regional diversity. You also have varied and interesting ECs. You might also look to see if there are any music scholarships. AwesomeOpossom might know.

The honors college is different at Pitt. You choose the honors classes if you want to take them and you can choose to earn an honors diploma. My daughter will not get an honors designation because she does not think it is necessary in the sciences. If she were a social science or humanities major, she would complete the honors requirements.

Apply early.

I already have my essay written and sent my SATs but my guidance counselor said she won’t be able to forward anything like GPA, rank, or letters of recommendations until october which isn’t nearly early enough for my tastes since I want full tuition so bad. hnnnnnnnnnngh
