Thank you everyone! Much appreciated!

I was wondering if anyone knew when students are informed if they receive scholarships from the Swanson School of Engineering and what the criterea is. I had read in a feed all freshman engineer students receive some form of merit aid and if so when are they are informed. My daughter has already been accepted into the Swanson School of Engineering.

All Engineering students definitely do NOT get aid. Aid is limited to few students. The first thing is that if you are UHC eligible, you are more likely to get aid. Depending on how strong your application was, your aid could come with acceptance or within a few weeks. For example, I applied in December, was accepted in mid-January, and within 2 weeks had my scholarship offers mailed to me. If you don’t hear anything within 1-2 months of acceptance, chances are you will not receive aid.

Hey Awesome, I saw that you were a bassoon player who took private lessons. I also play bassoon, and want to continue to play and take lessons in college, and I was wondering how you liked your teacher and the ensemble you were in? Thanks so much!

Teacher is AWESOME. Feel free to PM me for more info. However, she’s only allowed to take 3 students a semester through Pitt (you can take her privately too). Ensemble is another story-- there is orchestra in the fall which I have never done, and then there is Symphonic Band in the spring. In the past I just signed up for band because there were only 2 bassoonists on campus who could play (myself and a friend) last year…6 extra people appeared who wanted to play, and the director only took 3 and made us all audition (and gave me a 6 day warning) so I didn’t play. However, my two years in band were awesome. Great people in there (for the most part).

A caveat: The band director is retiring after like 40+ years of various service and we’re getting a new director, so nothing I say about band will be really helpful.

Hey awesome, so I have worked hard just like everyone else and all but the fact is that I’m paying for school myself due to the financial troubles. I’ve given my money away to my parents to help them etc. Now I want to make sure that I get a good education for the amount of money that I am paying. I plan on double degreeing…hard but I believe possible because I am truly dedicated to my future, because of my past.

So, 1) Is Pitts business school good and how are the classes for someone who like a challenge ?
2) It is possible to double degree in History and Finance and how hard on a scale of 1-10 would it be at Pitt, if I took summer and winter courses ?

Please and Thank you

Btab, you will want to look at the requirements for each major to determine how difficult it will be; not all majors are created equally. Some majors require more credits than others.

Do you have any AP credits? They are very helpful if you want a dual major.

MD Mom brings up good points-- check out what the requirements are. You also need to be careful if you are double majoring across schools (i.e. A&S and Business, SSOE and A&S, etc.) because their requirements for completing your degree vary (i.e. the A&S degrees require the Gen Eds whereas a SSOE degree requires the math/science background and not necessarily all the gen eds in A&S).

APs will also help you get a lot of those gen eds out of the way for the history degree (not sure if finance is in A&S or in Business School)

I know that Pitt has rolling admissions, but when do you think is “late” to apply? I got a combined CR/M score of 1190 and I am trying to decide if it is worth taking the SATs again.

Hi everyone, How much points is a B. Like if I get 70%, what letter grade will that be? how about 60%? and 80%?

It might be different with different classes. but can anyone give me a rough idea?

A B is a 3.0, but Pitt does use a plus and minus system. Typical 90, 80, 70, 60 grades. However, there are courses where you must get a C to apply it toward the degree.

oh no, i think i screwed up my chem paper. Hopefully the extra credit will be enough to save my chemistry this semester.

by the way, can we retake courses that we have passed?

Sometimes I think chemistry was created to torture us. I changed my major oh so many years ago because of chem. May the curve be kind to you, mrsmile10.
Q

I am not sure. You want to ask your advisor that question. It might be a case of retaking it to replace the grade, or retaking and having both grades show but only one count.

Have you heard of the Pitt Prestige Application? Recently I’ve received an email that is supposedly from U of Pittsburgh that states that I have a “special invitation” to apply with the Pitt Prestige Application. I did some search on the Internet about it but there weren’t any results for it. Is it really legitimate or was it a false email?

I wanted to ask the exact same question as greg. Son did the prestige application yesterday. It states no essay needed. Priority response, you get an answer within 2 weeks. But we could not find a way to use the code that they gave us to waive the application fee. Son emailed them. I wonder if it affects your chance for scholarship though since you do not write any essay. My son was still working on his at the time when it came. Any informations would be awesome!

Does it say you will be considered for scholarships on the application? I would call up OAFA and ask because normally you have to submit an essay if you want to be considered for scholarships.

For anyone wondering, the Pitt Prestige Application is legitimate.

So getting conflicting information. I called and was told by a person at the office that all applications need an essay for scholarships (person named Eula). Then second question was told we couldn’t use our fee waiver code. In other letters we were given a code to waive the application fee. So all in all I don’t know the value of the prestige application beyond the quick 2 week turnaround on acceptance. When you cannot use the waiver code. S was told he could send essays seperately via email or mail to go with his prestige application, there is no were on the app to enclose to attach one.

Well, saving the application fee at the cost of waiving potential for scholarship is no bargain. That does not make sense.
