Pitt FAQs

Regarding career services…

Although I can’t speak to that directly from experience, I do know that years ago deficiencies in career services was a common complaint at Pitt. However, significant resources have apparently been placed in that area.

In this years Princeton Review, Pitt was ranked #19 in the nation for career services. I think that ranking likely results from that effort to rectify the situation.

Do you know which Business Fraternity is the best? I’ve been looking at Alpha Kappa Psi, Delta Sigma Pi, and Phi Beta Lambda.

I know this is random but Im a student here at CBA and I’ve been debating on these ones.

Thank you for still answering questions! I’m planning on neuroscience and was wondering if you recommended going into orgo 1 fall of freshman year? I have a very strong biology background and plan on taking general chem this summer. Thank you very much!

Thanks for answering all these questions! I just got my acceptance letter to Pitt  and I was just wondering if you knew anything about the computer science department? I heard you could take classes at CMU, is this true?

There is a cooperative program with CMU. I think you can take classes on a space available basis. My daughter, a senior, did not take classes anywhere but Pitt. You can also take classes at some of the other Pittsburgh schools.

A few things.

1- Where are you taking gen chem this summer? If it is not at Pitt you need to make sure that Pitt will accept both the class AND lab credits (you need both for A&S and you need Chem 2 lab for SSOE) before you can move on to orgo. IF Pitt says “yes we’ll take the cred” then absolutely go into Orgo if you need it/want to take it. The only thing I would be wary of is that Orgo is a difficult class and you will be in your first semester of college. A lot of people take 1-2 semesters to adjust to the different rigor/courseload of college compared to high school, so be prepared for that.

I do not (other than it is an A&S major). You can take classes at CMU but it is difficult. I say that because the class has to NOT exist at Pitt and you have to explain WHY you want to take the class there. It can be difficult to cross-enroll, but I have known a few people who did it in Engineering (didn’t know any CS people who bothered).

How’s the diversity at University of Pittsburgh?

According to Collegeboard:

White/Caucasian: 78%
Black/African America: 7%
Asian: 6%
Non-Resident Alien: 3%
Ethnicity Unknown: 3%
Hispanic/Latino: 2%
Ethnicity Unknown: 2%

In my opinion…not that diverse. However I spend most of my time in Benedum (Engineering) which is way more diverse than the student body of Pitt.

Hey AwesomeOppossum,

I applied for Undecided as opposed to the major i wanted to go in for due to my somewhat low SAT scores. Does applying undecided increase my chances of getting in?

Hey AwesomeOppossum,

I am a senior and still deciding between PITT UMD and NC State, all for double major Business-Finance and History. I wanted to know how the school spirit was because granted I am going to school to learn, I also want to have a fun time and sports are a big deal to me along with having an involved student body.

Thanks, Brian

If you want to major in the hard sciences, I think applying undecided will definitely help. However, for humanities or fine arts majors, I don’t think it makes a difference. As for a low SAT score, as long as you are above that 1200 minimum I think you should be ok. A good GPA always helps to counteract that.

School spirit is pretty big at Pitt. You’ll have a HUGE group of people who very actively follow the two big sports: basketball and football (in fact, I have already bought my season tickets for football next year!). Even the smaller sports get some recognition. There are also a lot of campus-wide activities like PMADD (Pitt Make A Difference Day) where all the clubs get together and go volunteer around the city for a day, There’s the Dean’s Hour (once a week on Wednesdays or Thursdays I think) where people can talk to the Dean of Student Life and get cookies and coffee and hang out.

Beyond that, I am ALWAYS seeing people running around in Pitt-gear or Pitt-club gear. The level of love for Pitt is definitely high!

And, as always, Hail to Pitt!

I had a 1250 combined CR and Math. I’m retaking in March, though and I am going to send in my updated score. Hopefully 1900! Total!

What we’re your SAT and GPA in high school awesomeopposum? If you don’t mind me asking

Sent from my HTC One X+ using Tapatalk 2

Nope. I’ll have to try to remember them though…

SAT: M-780, CR-700, W-640 (1480/2120)
SAT II: Math II- 700, Chem- 710 or 720 (I don’t remember!), Latin- 750 or 760

GPA: (Please note my county had a scale of 94-100 = A, 90-93= B+ and APs get 0.5 added, the class types are “advanced honor” type level, AP, or post-AP. The HS I went to is highly competitive and for many years has been ranked the best or second-best HS in the nation.)

W- 3.96ish (4.3 senior year), UW- honestly, no idea, I’d have to check my grades, I’d guess around 3.5-3.6?

APs: Chem (4), US History (4), Latin: Ovid/Catullus (5), BC Calc (5, subscore 5), Government (4), English Lit (4), Statistics (5), Latin: Vergil (5)

ECs: Theater (4 years, House Manager and Stage Manager), Odyssey of the Mind (2 years), Piano (2 years in HS though I took lessons since 3rd grade), Latin Honor Society (4 years), Marching Band/Winter Guard (2 years/3 season), Planned (over 3-4 years) & hosted (in my senior year) a National Student Conference that had 350-400 attendees, Volunteer work (nursing home + GS/BS workshops/theater showings + theater workshops), Designed an experiment & wrote/presented a thesis on Oysters in the Chespeake Bay with the Smithsonian Institute, Designed a Lunar Habitat & Presented work to NASA Officials freshman year, there’s more but I can’t remember…

Hooks: URM (East-Indian), Female, 1st Generation American in (American) College (parents immigrated in the 80s)

Scholarships received: $2000/year from SSOE (switched to full-tuition my junior year), $10,000/year (“half tuition”) from UHC (for all 4 years)

I think that’s everything. It was a while ago so I may be forgetting things. Let me know if you have any other questions.

That’s amazing! I hope that 1800-1900 3.8 GPA gets me in :/

Any biomedical engineering senior who could answer my question? How difficulat is it maintain a 3.75 GPA as a pre-med?

Not a biomed engineering major; however, Pitt has a plus minus grading system. A 90 to 93 is an A-, which earns 3.75. This alone makes it difficult to maintain a 3.75.

I agree with what MD Mom said. Just getting an A- alone will start to kill your GPA. To give you an idea of how hard that 3.75 is, I applied for a prestigious fellowship last winter where the GPA cut-off was a 3.70. The high GPAs are rare and hard to get, but it’s possible to get one (I think I graduated around 3.72, admittedly not BioE or Pre-Med). You have to focus on studying and find a good balance between school and activities.

I will say this: Med Schools are going to recognize that you majored in engineering and NOT a hard science and will give you a bit of slack on your GPA. Not a whole lot, but a bit.
