Pitt FAQs

My daughter is an introvert. She does struggle at Pitt, BUT I think she would struggle anyplace. There are plenty of activities that appeal to many different people. There are plenty of places to go study and get quiet time, too.

Pittsburgh is a friendly place, in general.

You sound like a former roommate of mine! She wasn’t completely introverted, but she spent a lot of time on her own, maybe reading or gaming. She was fine and you will be too. It may be a bit hard to be alone at first since you may be sharing a room, but I always just found a quiet spot somewhere on campus if I wanted privacy or some me-time.

Quite friendly yes! There are very few obnoxious people I have ever interacted with. As a whole, Pitt students and Pittsburghers in general are super nice.

No idea and oddly enough I couldn’t find a number online either. I would contact someone either at OAFA or SSOE who should be able to answer your question.

Hey Awesome, do you know if housing is by lottery or by first come first serve this year? I’ve heard both from different people. Also, do you know when we find out our housing arrangements?

It is still by lottery according to someone who called PC a few weeks ago (I think MTNest maybe).

I believe some time in early June. I know that I didn’t know housing in May, but by the time I went to Pittstart in late June, I and everyone else knew where we were living.

Yup, it was me. It was a lottery system as of 1/23/13 when I received the reply.

From the email I received:

<<Thank you for contacting Panther Central! As long as your son meets his deposit deadline, he will be a guaranteed student. Those that meet this guarantee will be put into a lottery pool and place their preferences. In short, this means your son will want to pay by the deadline, but will not gain advantage by paying it earlier rather than later.

If you have any other questions feel free to contact Panther Central!

Regards,>>

Hi Awesome,

I am interested in pursuing a BS in Rehabilitation Science at UPitt. However, I saw that you are only eligible to begin majoring in it during your junior year. Therefore, what majors would you recommend I take my freshman and sophomore years? (BTW, my main interest in science lies in Physics, so would 2 years of majoring in Physics make the most sense?)

Thanks

I dont know a lot about Rehab science–what school is it in? I think you’re confusing “majoring for” with “declaring”. Students in Arts & Sciences are not allowed to declare their majors (i.e. officially be part of a department) until the end of their sophomore year (i.e. start of junior year). That’s just the way it is. You can certainly take classes from the department before then, though.

From Pitt’s website:“Plan to declare your major by the end of your sophomore year. Speak with your academic advisor about this in your individual appointments. While you are exploring areas of interest, ask people about their jobs, what they do, what kind of education they had, and whether they like their work. To get information concerning potential careers, visit Career Development (224 William Pitt Union) and the Counseling Center (334 William Pitt Union) early in your college career.”

Arts and Science students do declare majors as early as they want. I know that my daughter declared a major her first semester. I also remember in the information session it was said that advisors “pretty much insist” that students declare majors by the end of sophomore year. The implication about declaring was the sooner the better.

That major is in the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences.

A BS in Rehabilitation Science is the major - there is no other. See their website. The first two years, you amass the requirements for official acceptance into the program. Here are the prerequisites:
[SHRS: Rehabilitation Science (RS)](http://www.shrs.pitt.edu/RS.aspx?id=298&nav=303)

However taking more Physics beyond the requirements is a great idea if that’s what interests you. Physics is rigorous so you’ll be prepared.

Hello guys

I am looking forward to pursue a degree in finance for my undergraduate studies.
I got admission in some colleges and ultimately have to make decison among these 2

arizona state university

Penn state

The thing is if I choose penn state then I will be staring as a freshman at altoona and after 2 years will be transferred to the main campus that is the university park. (basically the 2+2 plan)

So can anyone tell me what would be the correct choice keeping in mind the placements by the university.

I am an international student.

Thanks in advance.

This is a Pitt thread…so if Pitt isn’t one of your options, I’d say you need to ask elsewhere (the ASU and PSU threads for instance).

Thanks for the info guys! Fingers crossed I get into Nordenberg :)

Hello Awesome Opossum!
My DH and I have a daughter headed to Pitt next year! Hooray!
We have a few questions for you…

There are so many dining plans. Is there an ‘average’ one that most people start off with. And…are ‘panther funds’ the same as ‘dining dollars?’

Sorry to sound so clueless and thanks in advance for your help!

Welcome laurendog  So glad your daughter decided on Pitt!

Thanks MTnest! Anything you can help us with would be greatly appreciated! We are newbies :)

Search this forum for “dining plans” - you’ll find a dozen threads addressing this issue.

For the dining plan, I would go with the most dining dollars. The passes are good at places like Market Central but dining dollars are good at the Pitt’s eating places around campus.

For freshman year, I believe we chose a Tier 2 plan but it was heavy in the dining passes because we thought he would use them. We were wrong. Dining dollars and passes expire at the end of semester so lots of kids will be trying to use them. You can always find someone with extra passes and offering to swipe you into Market Central (at least DS always had friends trying to finish them off).

Panther funds – you can add to the account and use it to buy textbooks, food etc. It is like cash. There is a list of merchants that accept it.

DS has loved his years at Pitt and I’m sure your DS will love it too!!

southeast mom - thanks. didn’t think of that.

MT Nest - Step-daughter is over the moon so I hope that Pitt is all that she dreams it is! lol. Thanks so much for the advice!!

And by the time I got here everyone had already given all the great advice!

I’ll add that you should chose the lowest tier with the most dining dollars. You think you will need more food than that, but I promise you won’t. I ended up eating out way more than I thought (convenient for study session days, days when you aren’t on campus, etc.) so my first semester I had almost 35 extra dining passes left over- a huge waste of money.

Awesome, what about a guy with a huge appetite? My son eats nonstop and has a very high metabolism. We ate at Market Central for the honors admitted student day and he said, “I don’t have enough hands for all the food” and was done after eating six plates of food.
