I applied superrr early to University of Pittsburgh Main (3 weeks ago) because it’s all I want! It’s my first and only choice in school. I’m a pretty good student, I’ve been a high honors student since the 9th grade, tons of ECs, my SAT is above my friend’s that got accepted’s SAT score by atleast 80 pts (1700).I just want to know what you’re record was when you applied. Your GPA, your ECs, leadership positions, SAT score, volunteer work, etc. I’m told not to worry but I do a lot! I have minor blemished in my grades (a C in geometry my sophomore year, and in a college chemistry class as well as my college physics class this year, which averaged to a 75 after I buckled down and got an A the 3rd quarter and 4th.) I’m just really worrying today, I don’t know what other schools to look at because I’m in denial that there’s a slight chance I won’t get in ): My essay will stand out, and my letters of rec. from from teachers that saw my progress (my physics) and from one that has been teaching for 40 years. Everyone I know is so sure I’ll get in but I’m really feeling discouraged right now. If you have been or are a current Pitt student in the last 5 years, please inform me of your standing when you applied! Thanks!

You need to break it down in M, CR, and W. If your M + CR is not at least 1200 you’re going to have some issues if you don’t have a super high GPA to balance it.

I don’t know what else to tell you…if you’re worried about getting in there’s not much else you can do- send letters, an essay, and a resume of activities.

Just want to clarify a few things:

Does Pitt use its own application? That’s what it looks like.

When do scholarship decisions get made? In particular, when will they get made for a rising senior applying in the summer?

It looks like letters of recommendation and an essay are considered supplementary materials, but wouldn’t they help for merit aid? How about a music supplement?

Yes, they use their own. It is very simple and straightforward.

First notification for scholarships usually start around end of Oct./Nov. and continues throughout the application season. This is based on what many have posted on this thread as well as when my kids received their scholarship letters.

For scholarship consideration an essay is required. However there have been students awarded scholarships without sending an essay. It certainly does not hurt your case if you send in additional material (including recommendations etc.). My kids did include an essay with their application but did not forward other material including recommendations.

MTnest answered most of your questions, but I just want to say I have never heard of someone sending in a music supplement. At the same time, I don’t know anyone who majors in music. The music department is not it’s own school, it’s part of A&S IIRC so there shouldn’t be too much involved with becoming a music major, if that is what your S or D is considering.

Hey AO,

I read online that freshmen transfers actually get accepted quite often. Mid way through the year too. If I were to try to transfer 2nd semester this coming up school year from Duquesne what classes do you think I should take if I want to go for liberal arts? As of now I’m going to be taking; chem lab, philosophy, economics, psychology, research and info skills, and writing across curriculum (last two are required freshmen courses). And since transfers are not guaranteed rooming do you think I’ll get rooming? And if I don’t get accepted the what? Can I reapply next year? I wish they had avg gpa of transfers listed somewhere.

Doesn’t matter because in A&S you don’t declare your major until sophomore year.

It depends. You will probably get housing, but it will not be a great location or room (probably stuck in a suite with other random people or something).

Reapply for the fall.

Okay, thanks for the info. And do I still just fill out the same app form and the 50 dollar fee?

Hello Awesome,

This is my first post. My DD and I will be visiting Pitt on the 20th. After scheduling the visit, DD got an email offering to waive the application fee, if she submitted her application before or during the visit. She is working to complete the application. Then she received an email saying

“pretty soon, you’re going to have something only a select group of students can claim: special status when it’s time to apply to the University of Pittsburgh! This means you’ll receive some extremely useful benefits, like a waived essay requirement and a fast admission decision.
P.S. You’ll have a leg up when it’s time to apply – I’ll be in touch about applying the moment the online application becomes available, so I encourage you to use that invitation to your advantage by applying right away.”

The P.S. part makes it sound like there will be a new online application in the near future. Is that correct, or am I just reading too much into it?

Thanks!!

No idea on that. Check out the transfer website:

https://oafa.pitt.edu/apply/admissions-process/transfers/

Looks like they have their own application link

Nope. I think you essentially got a “Pitt Prestige” application. This means that if you apply during your visit (HIGHLY recommend! I believe they also waive your fee) they have to look at it and get back to you within X-number of weeks. The odd thing is that it shouldn’t be in effect in the summer because admissions don’t begin until October. However, I think this does mean that when admissions start, you will get notification before November (i.e. fast turnaround). This does NOT guarantee a scholarship or anything of that nature, though.

I still recommend filling out the application thoroughly (essay, LoRs, resume) because those are things that help with scholarship money, if you’re looking for any.

Hey awesome, thanks for everything that you posted here as it has been a great help for me. As a rising senior hoping to get merit aid from Pitt, I was wondering when the entire application (LORs, essays, etc) will be available? Also, how many LORs do you recommend I send?

The application has been available since June 16 I think.

2-3 (I would say at least 1-2 related to your intended major and maybe a 3rd related to your hobbies or interest).

Hello Awesome, We plan on visiting Pitt in early September. Would it be more beneficial to wait until our visit to apply? If applying that day, are applications filled out on a computer (so should we have the application started online) and should we arrange to have test scores sent prior to our visit? Have already requested LOR but won’t have them from teachers/GC until back to school. Very appreciative of your help!

Last year, the application during the Pitt visit was paper. It is a simple application which you can fill out at Alumni Hall. They also waived the application fee if you applied at that time.

For both DS, they applied during the visit and attached their essay with their application. Sent scores and transcripts after the visit. They did accept “unofficial” transcripts with the applications (some of the students did this) but since you still had to send an “official” transcript, it really didn’t make sense to me. Notification of acceptances came in October with scholarships in November.

Good Luck!

MTnest…good to know…therefore, will bring a hard copy of essay to attach and then follow with scores, transcript and LOR. Thank you!

Hi Awesome,

My S is due to start at Swanson this fall with a probable major in Mechanical Engineering. Due to moving from TX to PA before high school, he “lost” a year of math (in his opinion) compared to his peers. To catch up, he took a Calc 1 course through SFSU summer between jr and sr years, scored a 3.0 GPA, and then went right into AP Calc BC as a sr without ever having taken AP Calc AB.

With the Calc 1 college credit and his scores on the Pitt placement tests, he was approved for Calc 2 as a freshman. His AP Calc BC result was a 4 (with AB subset score of 5), which would allow him to jump to Calc 3.

He was all set to stay with Calc 2 until he spoke with a friend today (at Penn State, but also in engineering) who indicated that Calc 2 was a “death course” that would kill his GPA, and also that it taught things like series (please forgive me, I never took a calculus course in my life so I am only repeating what son was told) that “you never use again in engineering”. Friend also said that Calc 3 was easier and more useful, and that if calc 2 could be skipped it should be.

I don’t know how different curricula are from school to school, so it may be completely different at Pitt. I do know that the advisor at Pitt Start advised not taking on more than necessary to be challenged, as you will be challenged whatever you do as a freshman—but this friend seemed to be implying that the more advanced course would be less challenging and more useful?

As someone who has gone through the curriculum, what are your thoughts? Thank you.

Hi Awesome! I am starting at Pitt in the fall. I was wondering where you would look for a student job. I don’t have work study and I really wanted to get something in research or a basic receptionist position. Thanks in advance.

My daughter worked at the bookstore. She also worked as a tutor when she was an upperclassman. If you want to work in a department, you can go directly to the department or talk with your professors.
