Does anyone know anything about Sterling landing apartments? I know that they have a few complexes but I can not seem to find any reviews.

Hi! I would love to get some feedback on whether or not I have a chance at getting substantial merit scholarships. Pitt is pretty much my top choice right now, but my only concern is the money since I’m OOS. I’m from California, GPA 3.79 with mostly honors & AP classes, ACT 33, SAT 2190 (but I’m planning on only sending my ACT), school doesn’t rank. I am the president of Chinese Club, a section editor for the yearbook, and a Key Club member with 200+ volunteer hours. I have also volunteered at two hospitals over two summers & shadowed a doctor for two summers. (If you can’t tell, I’m going for pre-med!) I played jv tennis for 3 years. I’m planning to submit 2 letters of rec, an essay, and an academic resume (we submit that through email, right?). I’m also a NMSF, but according to my research, Pitt doesn’t give out much money based on that. Any feedback is appreciated! Thanks! :)

I was accepted into pitt from out of state, and am thinking about attending. I applied to the college of arts and sciences, but can I change to some other college at pittsburgh once I decide on a major? I am thinking about doing speech pathology in which case I would need a communication disorders major in the college of health and rehabilitation sciences. I have no idea if I can do this or not, and if it is an easy thing to do.

SHRS is an upper level school so you don’t actually enter that until you complete 45 credits, so being in A&S is perfectly fine. You could call admissions and tell them you are intended pre-communication studies as your major. If you think you meet the criteria for freshman guarantee, you can ask them about that too. http://www.shrs.pitt.edu/Admissions.aspx?id=3488

Hey, I had a few questions for you guys!

I’m moving back from India to the US after 8 years for the Spring Term and I am almost definitely going to be joining Pitt (putting the deposit down tomorrow). So, my questions are:

I am going to be in the School of Business Administration majoring in Finance. Could I get an idea of how big Finance is at Pitt? Are the classes generally large or are they comparatively small (20-25) students? And is the teaching up to the high standards of the rest of Pitt?

How diverse/open-minded is the student body at Pitt? The statistics are available online, but I would like insight from within. Would I have a tough time making friends considering that I’m joining in the Spring and also considering that I am kind of an international student? I’m not expecting racism or anything like that, but I seem to notice that large state universities usually have their students pooling together based on ethnicity.
Do a lot of the students tend to be stuck in high-school, with regards to their social-life (as is common in many state schools) or are they more open to meeting other people?

What is the general opinion regarding internships/ study abroad opportunities at Pitt? And in specific, with regard to Finance?

Is Pittsburgh a good city for walking? Could I occasionally cover long-distances on foot, like I could in New York City? I could walk from Downtown Brooklyn to Uptown Manhattan with no hassles, so could a similar distance be feasibly covered by walk in Pittsburgh? I don’t plan on owning a car initially and I sometimes find public transport a nuisance, so this is quite important to me (though not a deal-breaker).

I’ll let the students answer the academic questions, but I can tell you that my hometown of Pittsburgh - particularly around Pitt - is one of the best cities for walking. You won’t need a car, but you won’t be able to lug as many groceries at a time then. There are many different neighborhoods, parks and museums you can walk to from campus (or take bus). A bike is also useful. My son does all his shopping with a bike and panniers.

I am sure this question was asked many times before but… I am trying to find out what stats are needed the Chancellor’s scholarship invitation. Can anyone offer insights? D is class of 15 so she will be applying next Fall.

I would wait to see what happens this year and then you can see what is “needed”. You need top stats as well as something “extra” to get the invite to interview for the Chancellor’s. You do know you have to be “invited” to apply and then you usually have a few weeks to complete the Chancellor’s application. Who they invite for interviews is based on the Chancellor’s application.

@MTnest - Yes, I do understand the process. S2 (HS12) was invited when he was applying to colleges. I was trying to figure out if stats for invitation has changed much since then. Thanks.

The stats and competition seem to be increasing each year :(

Awesome,

Does Pitt have an Accepted Student’s Day?

Thanks!

Pitt has several Accepted Student Days including programs for accepted honor’s students.

SoofDad - there are several threads from last year around March and April regarding the admitted student days. I bumped two of them but you can go back and look at old threads. Search for accepted or admitted student days. Hope this helps.

You might have a slightly harder time since you are joining in the spring and will miss out on all of the “required” bonding activities that the fall provides (orientation, activities fair, etc.) What I highly recommend- try to get into a room with a roommate, talk to your classmates, join a few clubs where you WILL go to meetings regularly. If you put yourself out there early on it will be much easier to meet people. Really, your only disadvantage is not knowing the campus as well. I was making new friends and joining new clubs all the time, so you won’t be horribly disadvantaged.

As for the diversity thing, this is one of the areas that I really do feel Pitt is lacking. HOWEVER, even though Pitt as a whole is not really diverse, that doesn’t stop you from having a diverse group of friends. (One of the many reasons I loved UHC housing was because it was much more diverse than the campus of Pitt in general).

You might be interested in joining the Indian Student Association (ISA). They were never really my cup of tea (a bit too clique-y in my opinion) but they held a bunch of nice events like Mehendi Nights, Garbas, and such that did ease my homesickness for my first year when I was away from my own community.

Can’t answer to Finance specifically but study abroad is pretty popular and well looked upon. The people in the study abroad office are THE NICEST so I would definitely say stop by and talk to them or go to their seminars/fairs.

The area where school is located (Oakland, NOT Downtown) is VERY walkable! You really don’t need to use the bus or shuttle to get from any part of campus to any other. Even some nearby neighborhoods (Squirrel Hill, Shadyside) are in walking distance. The bus system, although not the MOST reliable in terms of sticking to its schedule, is a great convenience too for getting from A to B quickly, or reaching farther away neighborhoods like South Side, Waterfront, and even Downtown (which is a bit of a long, somewhat sketchy at times, walk). You really don’t need a car to be comfortable (I only had one for my senior year and mostly used it to drive to the grocery store and go home for breaks).

AwesomeOpossum: I am a sophomore in a LAC in Virginia and I am planning to apply to U Pitt’s biology program for my junior year but I am worried about getting on-campus housing. I am sending my application in late December-early January but the other colleges I am applying to won’t send my decision letter until April/May. With this, I wouldn’t be able to put the housing deposit down at Pitt (if I still want to go) until after I hear back from my other colleges. So will I be able to get on-campus housing if I wait until April/May to put down the deposit. Also how well does Pitt give merit or fin-aid for OOS transfer students?

As a transfer student, you get last pick of on-campus housing. Luckily, we just opened a new dorm which allows for 450 (ish) more beds on campus. With that said, be prepared to be in a lower-classmen dorm with random people as an extra roommate (i.e. don’t expect to get a nice dorm/apartment room). I think you should be ok, but there is technically no guarantee.

I don’t actually know the numbers for transfer, but my guess is less than their incoming freshman (mostly because I imagine most of their money for scholarships goes there first).

Hello!!

I saw this thread, and you looked like the perfect person to answer my questions.

I am looking to transfer into the Swanson School of Engineering this upcoming fall (2014), as a sophmore. I will have completed a year’s worth of coursework at a smaller liberal arts college, Saint Francis University, located in Loretto, Pennsylvania. My house is 30-45 minutes away from Pitt, however, so it would be even closer. My biggest worry right now is finding housing. I heard that they opened Tower C to all year levels recently? I was also looking at possibly joining one of the bands, but I’m not sure how hard they are to get into, what they have to offer, how many different options there are, etc… Also, I’m not even sure how they look at transfer students for the programs. The Quittich Club you mentioned seems interesting as well–could you provide some information on that, too?

Thank you so, so much. I really appreciate any help you can provide. :)

Sincerely,
Lydia

I think Tower C may have moved back to upperclassmen housing now that Nordy is open, but I am not sure. Your best bet is to check out all the housing options at Panther Central: [University of Pittsburgh - Housing Services - Options](http://pc.pitt.edu/housing/options.php)

Keep in mind that as a transfer student, you get last pick on housing (and it’s technically not guaranteed, although I don’t think you will have a problem being placed somewhere on campus).

We have Marching Band, Symphonic Band, and Orchestra as our big groups. Marching Band is fall only, and yes you have to audition for it (although TBH I haven’t heard of anyone being turned away). However, it is a big time commitment and we have a new director this year who is much more strict about students missing rehearsal due to class/exams/etc. Which can be a pain, since the band is volunteer-based.

Symphonic band is run by the same director, but is spring only. Again, you have to audition for it and not everyone gets in.

Orchestra is year round. I imagine auditions are involved. I never did orchestra so I don’t know TOO much about it, but they have at least 1 concert per semester.

There are also smaller groups (quartets and such) that I am sure exist.

It’s an intramural sport, and a lot of fun! In the fall they’ll do open practices where you can learn game play and meet the team. Generally in September or early October they will hold tryouts to be placed on the competitive tournament roster. Those players practice more often and travel for games. However, they have casual pick-up days where anyone is invited to come play.

When you get to Pitt, I highly recommend going to the activities fair before school starts and wander around and see what clubs or groups you may want to join!

Pitt told me they want my mid year grades and dec. sat before they make a final decision. should i send them another letter of rec as well as a letter explaining i really want to go to pitt?

What have you sent them already? If you only sent 2 LoR, a third is fine. If you have already sent 3, do not send any more. If you already submitted an essay, do not send another letter. If you have not submitted an essay, I think an essay on why Pitt is a good fit for you (or rather, what YOU can BRING to Pitt) will work much better than “I really want to go to Pitt please let me in”.

For now, focus on doing well in School and on the SATs.

Hello,

Tow questions:

1) Will we get much visiting Pitt around the Christmas holidays (12/27 - 1/2) - we got nothing to do, but the down side is campus will be closed. Scheduling around school year with college and high school classes is pretty difficult.

2) We are from OH and are deciding b/w Pitt and Purdue for engineering. Our son is admitted to both. He likes biomedical or mechanical.

Thanks for the Pitt guy who responded to so many questions!
