Pitt Junior here, any questions?

When we’re visiting our daughter at Pitt, where’s the best place in the area to watch the football game on a big screen?

^ I’d put my vote in for Nordy’s Place, which is in the bottom of the Union.

Can parents go there too? I have a feeling my daughter wouldn’t want to be seen with us. :)

Is it extremely hard to “maintain a science and quality point average of at least 3.75” for the guaranteed med program?

Depends on how good you are and how much you are willing to study! Sciences are very competitive, but an A is possible. The Math department has a rule that you cannot get a final grade more than one grade different than the grade you got on your final (which is tough if you are not a good test-taker), no matter what you got the rest of the semester. A single B in a 4 credit course could take you below a 3.75.

Thank you.

How are the book clubs in the honors program? I love to read, and I just want to know if this is really an active thing; or just brochure talk?

I know there are buses to get you around campus. Are the price of those buses included in your tuition? (cause I think most urban universities work that way, but I just wanted to double check)

I’m a senior this year and I just got conditional acceptance in the physical therapy graduate school. Can I choose any major as my undergrad? I know I have to start off in A&S my first year or two before I transfer to S&H… Does this mean I have to pick a major in A&S? Any other additional snip-its about the physical therapy program at Pitt would be helpful too :)

How hard is it to maintain a 3.3 at Pitt? (especially if I have to take a load of science courses) Are there tutoring or studying programs available?

Buses are free with Pitt ID.

I’m an engineer so I take all sciences courses too. It’s not too too bad to maintain a 3.3 but you have to work for it. But for some people, it comes naturally. For others it can be a lot more difficult. I would say that the courses here are just as rigorous as the equivalent AP science courses I took in highschool. Hope that gives you an idea! And yes, there are a ton of tutoring and study sessions to attend- especially as a freshman.

Thanks, Emi!

Orchid, that “below 3.75 gpa” depends on how many credits you take. If you take two 4-credit courses and two 3-credit courses, you need A’s in both 4-credit classes. But if you take an fifth course of 3 credits, you can get a B in one of the 4-credit courses and still be above a 3.75, as long as all others are A’s. If you are determined to work a lot, you can do it! I know many students who did.

Anon_Person,

I was (briefly) in the honors college’s “pizza and prose” book club. It was certainly interesting-while I was there, we read works by Kinzey; Nietzsche; Freud and others, and there were good (sometimes heated) discussions. There’s also “pizza and plays”-I hear that’s pretty good, too. You should consider joining one of the clubs-it would be a worthwhile experience. Good luck.

(Oh, by the way-sorry if any of this is unclear; the mix of insomnia/exhaustion is kicking my butt right now. Grrr…finals week!)

Oh, and LurkNess,

I’ve seen more than one parent down in Nordy’s Place-your daughter probably won’t even notice that you guys are there ;)

^ thanks so much!

I know from Boston, but if you know anything about Rutgers… do you think Pitt is better than Rutgers?

Better in what way?

NJMK17,

I am a Rutgers grad (RC '84) and a Pittsburgh resident for the past 20 years. I think which school is better depends on the major. Both are good academic institutions.

Rutgers is a bus or train ride from NYC, but New Brunswick, NJ is not the best college location. Pittsburgh is a nicer college city, and within a days drive of DC, NYC or Chicago.

Here’s another question…how would you say, in general, the events of the honors college are? For example, the website says that there are theater performances, etc, free. Also, did you study abroad in Mongolia?

2nd semester Junior here, if anyone needs anything answered :)

Anyone can sign up for “PittArts”, which offers free or low-cost tickets to many cultural events around the city (that is, unless things have changed in the past few years!)

^They haven’t
