Pitt nursing

Hi, everyone!
I applied to Pitt in mid-November and got accepted into the school of nursing and honors college. I have not decided if i am going to attend pitt yet because i am waiting to hear back about scholarships (since i am oos) so that could be the deciding factor. Based on other threads I am guessing i should not get too worried that i have not heard about that yet, but i still really hope i hear back soon.

I was wondering if there were any students in the school of nursing on here and if they had any advice, comments on their experience, anything. i would greatly appreciate it!

There are a couple of nursing students and parents who frequent this board, but you should also try searching this forum. Quite a lot has been written in the past about Pitt’s nursing program, which is excellent and one of the top ones in the country, from what I understand.

Also, I think there is a separate nursing scholarship, but that might not be enough for you to be able to choose Pitt because the OOS tuition is pretty high. Best of luck!

Thanks! I will do that

The nursing school at Pitt is top rated. The nursing school is one of Pitt’s most prestigious schools. Pitt is unique in that the nursing school provides clinical experience to its students very early on. The students are assigned to various departments at UPMC(a world famous teaching hospital). The clinical experience is amazing. Also, it is very convenient for nursing students to roll out of bed and be at the hospital in a matter of minutes. Other universities do not have the same outstanding clinical opportunities and also the students often have to commute to the hospitals they are assigned to.
The classes are challenging and the curriculum is tough- even for the best students. Be prepared to study hard. Some of the profs are excellent and some are not so great- however most are highly educated and very informed in their specialties. The lab facilities are excellent- if you have any specific questions - i would be happy to answer them for you

hey there! im going to be a second semester sophomore student in the nursing program come the new year at pitt. im also a male in the program, not sure if that means anything to you. anyway, pitts nursing program so far has been unlike any other. ill first start by saying, when the nursing students have an exam, the rest of the campus knows. as soon as you tell someone at the school youre in the nursing program, they right away know how much work you are always doing. the work is very challenging but with that said, a few of my other friends went to school for nursing also, and when we come home to share our stories, i am consistently ahead and more knowledgeable than them, its a great feeling. the benefits to the program in my eyes are endless.

youre admitted directly into the program from day one

you start getting into nursing classes day one

clinicals start first semester of your sophomore year

one of the top programs in the nation etc.

these are just a few of the great things the program has to offer. scholarship wise, if youre admitted into the honors program, i believe you automatically receive a 2000 scholarship, but dont quote me on that. within the program itself, they offer scholarships every year to students who qualify in relation to the requirements. that wont come out for some time, and i think each year the applications are due in march. but honestly i couldnt see myself any where else for nursing. the hospitals are INCREDIBLE for teaching, so many hands on experiences take place. all of the faculty (except for a few) are all there to help you through the program because they realize how hard the work is and how much time we put into studying. if you have ANY questions, please dont hesitate to ask, id be glad to help any way i can!! good luck on your decision!!!

Thanks so much nurse123 and panthernation! Your replies are really helpful and greatly appreciated. I will definitely come to you if I have any more questions
Still leaning towards pitt :)

I don’t know about nursing, but in general at Pitt there is no guaranteed scholarship tied to acceptance in the Honors Program. Much of the merit scholarship money seems to be targeted towards the best out of state students.

what are my chances of being accepted into the nursing program? I’m a senior at a private catholic high school and am out-of-state
GPA:3.5
ACT: 26
was in 4 honors and 1 AP class throughout high school.

I also have almost 200 volunteer hours at a hospital

I was also out of state and had like a 3.7. Like you I also volunteer at a hopsital. Somehow I got in to the nursing program at pitt for 2013! (i’m not sure if i wana go there though) Honestly, I think it was my essay that got me in, so write a really good one if ya can  I kinda feel like I’m at the lower end of the people who got accepted so I’m not sure. My SAT superscore was like 1980, and a 1270 for the verbal and math. So idk, it’s luck of the draw I guess. GOOD LUCK
