Hey everyone, so now I've cut down my list to just Pitt and Syracuse. I'm from MA and am planning to major in Int'l Business (Or a similar program). I like how both schools have great school spirit, good academics, pretty good prestige, and fairly large sizes that aren't overwhelming. I do not like how Pitt is so far away (10 hours compared to 5) or how cold and desolate Syracuse, NY is. So where should I go?

Bump, bump.

What are your thoughts about being away from family? Have you ever been away from home for an extended period of time? Are you confident and independent? Ask youself some of these questions. You may discover you are fine knowing your trips home will likely be less often if you are at Pitt, on the other hand, if you are unsettled at the prospect of not having easier access to family, that may push you towards Syracuse.

How do the finances stack up? I believe Pitt is less costly than Syracuse, of course that depends on financial aid too?

You should also compare the internships and job placement offerings of the two schools. It is my understanding that Pitt places more than 50% of graduating students with local companies. If you want to stay in Pittsburgh…not a problem. I’m unsure of Syracuse, but I believe they may have greater connections that could potentially place you elsewhere in the country.

I think I would not visit family outside of vacations at either institution, so its really just the long trip I don’t like. I don’t think my parents would give me money for plane tickets so the extreme bus/train rides are quite unappealing.

Financially, I presume that Pitt will end up only a little less expensive than Syracuse. Syracuse gave me great aid, still waiting on Pitt.

Your third point is what concerns me, from asking around and experience it seems that Syracuse is more well known in the area. But I thought maybe that’s just from who’ve I asked and what I’ve seen. But is that worth being in Syracuse, instead of Pittsburgh which I see as a much better city with an added bonus of having less snow? I’ve also heard Pitt is up and coming, but I don’t know how I should interpret that either.

Overall, I love both but they both have pros and cons which makes this so hard.

well I’m biased but go to Pittsburgh

Unless has Syracuse has changed a lot in the five years or so since I’ve last been there, the city is really rather sad. There’s far more interesting going on in Pittsburgh.

Bump, anyone else?

Another vote for Pittsburgh. I would say because of the city. I’m a big city kind of girl, so I’m biased. The weather sucks in both cities.

I recently visited Pitt, and although the campus is pretty typical, the city is loads of fun! There’s museums, a spring carnival (free to students), a zoo, a botanical garden, etc. Plus, all the strangers I had to bug for directions were very nice to me.

I don’t know anything about Syracuse so I won’t say anything. :)

Good luck with your decision!

Bump, anyone else?

See who goes further in the NCAA tournament and then make your decision. They could end up playing eachother in the Final Four… so that would be the easiest way to make your decision. And the most logical.

hahaha quaker good idea =D

actually i think they play each other in final four like on the left side of the bracket (idk divisions) cause i have pitt playing them in my bracket =ppp (and pitt winning of course!)

lol on a serious note though, OP, i think you should visit both schools and see where you fit more… i visited pitt last week and its very veryy urban (which i like) and i heard syracuse was very campus isolated
so i guess it depends on which environment you prefer

Lol maybe I should base it off March Madness, then I wouldn’t have to make the hard decision myself. =)

abc0, I have visited both campuses before and like them both. I love Pitt because of the city but I also like the quintessential college atmosphere of 'Cuse. Pitt has a slight edge if I was purely deciding based on the environments they’re in but I got a really good financial package from Syracuse and it seems like a better value though still expensive. Also, as mentioned before its closer to home and the name seems to be more prestigious around here. Any truth to this?

Bump bump.

Pittsburgh is a much more fun city than Syracuse.

So is the consensus Pitt, even though they will be similarly priced, for the city and the opportunities it will give me at the expense of a little prestige and possibly more job offerings outside of the PA area? That’s fine, just making sure. Anyone wanna shed light on whether those two negatives are accurate?

Oh and, go Pitt tonight!

Bumpppppp.

Personally, I think that Pitt has at least as much prestige as Syracuse, over all.

Academically Syracuse kicks Pitt’s ass, in most categories.
Syracuse the city…not much going on there, sad to say. Pittsburgh has alot to do outside the school.

Though within Syracuse’s campus and places outside of it, it’s hard to run out of options.
1.) Syracuse Greek life…HUGE
2.) Syracuse Athletics…Basketball, Football, Lacrosse…=HUGE
3.) Marshall street, where thousands can be found on a weekend. Many restaurants, cafes, etc. My favorite is Down Under( A head shop), Funk N waffles ( Music venue that sells amazing waffles), And Hollywood Hookah (amazing hookah bar…amazing haha)
4.) Westcott theater…Just reopened this year has brought in about 2-3 concerts a week, from small acts to big acts…good deal right there
5.) Armory Square…Just has a lot of bars and nightclubs
6.) City of Syracuse has a lot of festivals every weekend in the spring and fall…(Winter not so much, cold and snow)

Cold and snow are they negative aspects. But it’s livable.

Plus, Syracuse’s campus is 1000x better than Pitt’s. Better looking, better design, etc

The vice president of the United States went to Syracuse…

However Syracuse Law…nothing to brag about.
