Hello PittRA2013,
I’m an incoming freshman this fall and I was assigned to a single in the Holland hall on floor 7. I have been looking around on the internet for any information about the rooms but since I’m in another country right now, I have limited resources. So I was wondering, what furniture does the room come with? Is there a closet or anywhere I could hang any of my clothing? And do you have any suggestions to what I should bring? I am on my own right now so I will be bringing most of my belongings with me…is the room big enough for that? Thank you!

Soptanx, the rooms will have a bed, a desk with a chair, and a chest of drawers. There will also be a place to hang your clothing. Many beds on campus can be raised up, which allows for extra storage underneath.

So how hot does Holland get with no A/C?

Hi, I am going to be a freshman next year, so I still have a lot of time to decide which residence hall I want to choose. I want a single, so I am going to pick Tower C as my first choice. Is there a high or low chance that I will get my first choice?
My second choice will probably be Holland, but I am a bit worried because it has no A/C. Does it get too hot?
What other singles options can I get? Not Lothrop because it is not at the center with most of the residence halls, and I don’t want to feel left out. I really want Tower C, but I guess I have to have other choices too.

Just a general observation not specifically about Pitt. I helped my son move into his freshman dorm at large state university. Waiting for elevators gave us a chance to meet other families moving their stuff in. The amount of clothes coming back DOWN the elevators (when families realized how much less fit into a dorm room than into their child’s room at home) held up the process quite a bit. Do yourselves a favor and leave most of your kids’ stuff at home. If there’s something they have to have that they left at home, wait a week to see if they still have the jones, and then send it to them.

Right now Tower C is mostly first year students. There is a chance you will receive your first choice of housing, but nothing is guaranteed.

Only the first few weeks of the semester are hot (if that, it all depends on the weather). If you get a Holland room, I recommend bringing some sort of window fan (i.e. box fan) to put in the window to get some additional air circulation. For 3 of my 4 years at Pitt I lived in a room with no AC and managed fine- just go somewhere cooler during the day and only be in your room at night. Again, this is only going to be an issue, if at all, for the first few weeks. Once it starts cooling down in mid-September, the lack of AC won’t be an issue.

Lothrop is the only other option, although I always considered it more of an upperclassmen dorm (i.e. mostly Sophomores). Even though most residence halls are “at the center of campus”, the “far away” ones are not more than a 5-10 minute walk (maximum, ignoring Centra-Plaza apartments) from any other dorm on campus. That’s the nice thing about Pitt- it’s way more centralized than people think. No matter where you live, you won’t be far away from most stuff.

This is a very old post BUT hoping that maybe a Pitt RA might pipe in. My son will most likely be attending Pitt in the fall as an engineering student. He is hoping to live in Forbes in the Engineering LLC. He is possibly interested in becoming an RA in his future years. My question is, are there engineering students who are also RAs?

Yes, it seems there are RAs who are engineering majors.
So if you were an incoming freshman, what residence hall would be your #1 choice? My daughter will be starting their in the fall, and she wasn’t really impressed with the Towers when she took the campus tour in the fall. Her sister (currently a freshman) is in Sutherland and she likes that, but that’s the Honors students and my incoming freshman daughter fell just short of being eligible for that.
Does she have any interest in any of the Living Learning Communities? My son is going to try to be placed in the Engineering LLC which is in Forbes Hall. We visited campus last weekend and Nordenberg Hall is their newest dorm and it is really nice! There are freshman there…just depends on if she wants to live in an LLC.
@mommdc Thank you so much! This is helpful.
@OhBoyChoboy your D can still apply to the honors LLC if she wants.
Yes, Nordenberg is the new freshman dorm.
They can put a few dorms on the housing application in order of preference.
Lothrop is supposed to be nice as well. They have single rooms.
Does anyone have first hand knowlege of Casa Cultural (the Spanish/Portuguese language LLC)?
@psycholing ^^still following xD
@mommdc Thanks for the tips. Applying to the Honors LLC sounds intriguing because she was borderline Honors in the first place. I’m assuming the Honors LLC is housed in Sutherland? And yes, I did read that they can prioritize their dorm choices on the housing application. It all sounds encouraging. Thanks again.
Yes, in recent years freshmen Honors LLC has been in Sutherland Hall West.
Only a few students who have full scholarships have guaranteed housing in Honors LLC.
All others fill out an application as part of the housing application if they are interested in one of the LLCs.
