Pitt v. U Del

Son is deciding between U Pitt and U Del Business schools to major in Finance. Feel that Pitt’s program is a little stronger but that he might have better college experience at Delaware. We have visited both and they seem great in their own ways ie. city campus v. more traditional “green” campus. Any advice from people with experience at these schools would be a big help. Thanks

Cost difference? Admitted to honors or business honors?

Cost about the same. No honors

You are correct that Pitt is a little better for business. I don’t know that I’d agree that UDel would be a better college experience. Have y’all visited? Pitt has a lovely urban campus in a fun city. It comes down to personal preference. We much preferred Pitt and Pittsburgh.

Agreed, it probably comes down to personal preference. We did visit. I like the more traditional campus, think my son might be leaning towards the benefits a city has to offer.

My daughter is at UD and besides covid has absolutely loved everything about it. The campus is beautiful, Main Street is great, and there’s always a lot to do. My 18 year old was accepted into the business schools at both, Pitt gave a lot less merit. She still isn’t close to a final decision yet.:sob:

Thanks. Good luck to you and your daughter. Nice to know that our kids have good options.

I’d easily choose Pitt, as it’s stronger academically and better respected, with higher quality applicants than UDel. It’s a lot easier to get into UDel. Just going by local kids alone, there is a marked difference between the UDel set and the Pitt-bound kids, without exception. If you’re interested in atmosphere, there’s no shortage of great activities at Pitt.

As someone who applied to both (but likely not going to either), I say it’s preference. UDel has a lot of parties and feels like a college town. However, Pitt definitely felt a lot more relaxed and not dominated by greek life. I’m not a partier and like city atmosphere so I like Pitt. But it’s all about fit. Yes, Pitt is a better school for business, but not much better. Also consider financials and location. If you live in PA or DE, then maybe the in-state school is better.

I don’t disagree, but what if the choice is between Pitt business and Delaware Honors & business? We are in NY and Delaware is also geographically desirable. Slightly more merit at Delaware but pretty close.

Look into whether it’s a direct admit or requires a 2nd process sophomore year.
Choose the direct admit.

Thank you, both were directed admit. He chose Pitt

Congrats. My daughter loved Pitt during the admissions process, but they didn’t offer her desired major so she went elsewhere. I thought it was great. Many kids from our area go there and love it. My wife worked for the business dean, Arjang Assad at his previous school and we still keep in touch. He is a marvelous person. I would say best dean of any school I have ever met. Anything he is involved in will be class. Pittsburgh the city is great as well. Enjoy.

Thank you for sharing that information
