Pitt versus Penn State HELP

Im having a lot of trouble deciding where to attend college. I'm down to penn state and pitt and I plan on majoring in marketing. At both schools im currently in the liberal arts programs. The cost will basically be the same and they are both the same distance from my home. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!

There’s a really big difference in atmosphere between these two school which should help you decide. Penn State is in a small town surrounded by a rural area. There will be plenty to do, but all of it will be associated with Penn State. Pitt is in a big city where there is much more to do outside the university (and plenty within it too). You get a free bus pass with which you can explore all the vibrant neighborhoods in the city.

Yes, the choice depends on if you want to be in city or college town. At Penn State it will be the traditional college experience whereas at Pitt it will be city college experience. If you don’t care about that then there is no way to decide.

Word of advice: You need to visit both immediately. May 1 is coming.

I visited both last week, and I guess that’s my problem. The campuses both have great things about them so I’m having trouble deciding on the school based on other factors. Penn State is so renowned for its business school, but I think I prefer the campus and lifestyle of Pitt, not much I like about Penn State besides the aesthetically pleasing campus. I guess my problem is whether to choose my school based on the campus life (Pitt) or the academics (Penn State)?

Only you can answer that question. Which one will impact your 4 years at school the most?

Try to picture yourself at each school. Which feels right?

I think if you were only considering the academics, and in your assessment PSU comes out ahead, you would choose PSU.

But you love Pitt’s campus, so you are looking for someone to tell you that the academics at Pitt are great.

They are.

Another distinctive difference between the two schools is that at PSU, if you want to switch majors, or try to make any changes in your requirements, there is a lot of red tape to go through, and they are pretty rigid. Pitt on the other hand is very flexible. That was a big selling point to us.

Education is the same, go with the campus you like more.

If you are interested in marketing, you may have more opportunities in the city than in a college town. Pittsburgh has industry, professional sports, and a huge hospital industry, all of which need marketing people.

Pennsylvania State University should be an easy choice for Business.
You will get pretty biased opinions here. Post this on college search and selection and business forum.

Thanks phonedog for the idea! Thanks everyone for input, it’s always welcome!

Better internship opportunities at Pitt, and internships are guaranteed.

Penn State is still dealing with the fallout of the their child sex abuse scandal. The former President, athletic director and Senior Vice President are still headed for trial. Applications are down about 10% across their system. They are still spending 10s of millions on lawsuit settlements, PR, and damage control. I’d be cautious about selecting PSU. It’s reputation has taken a hit across the country.

I wouldn’t worry about Penn State’s scandal. None of that crap pertains to the excellent academics at Penn State. Penn State’s academic reputation is still top-notch and completely unaffected by the scandal. I visited both schools but ultimately chose Pitt mainly because of the smaller student body, the excellent medical center, and the compact campus. You can’t go wrong with either. I would choose based on their marketing programs and the campus environment.

^^^ This!
It may not seem important now but by your junior year the differences in internship opportunities will be of major concern.
