Having trouble deciding between the Communications major at Pitt and at UMass Amherst. The price of both is practically the same for me but I want to go to a school where I can not only prepare myself for the job market but get to know my professors. I don’t want every class to be taught by a TA. I want professors that will care about my learning but not baby me. Is UMass better for communications or is Pitt better, relatively speaking? Which degree will be worth more? Given that everything else about the two schools is equal, how does one department compare to the other?
Great options. This is totally more about where you want to live and other best fit decisions for you.
Which is your home state? Can be good re: travel and familiarity. Can be a negative in terms of expanding your horizons. Depends.
Pitt. Cool up and coming city. Better sports teams. Excellent academics. More urban campus style. Not overly so but a bit more pre professional vibe to some degree. Excellent career outcomes and national brand.
Massachusetts. More traditonal campus adjoining a nice but small college town. Lots of new buildings going up. Excellent academics. More rural campus environment. Excellent career outcomes and brand on the rise. Best college dining options in contry. Always a bit more SJW vibe in the pioneer valley. Top Hockey team in country.
Really an academic coin flip.
Thank you for the feedback! I live in CT and I’m not entirely sure what I’m looking for in a campus so I wanted to see which school is better for my major and more or less better for a career and internships out of college.
They will be equally good for your ultimate career goals.
Internships in Pittsburgh will be more readily available. IMHO.
Lots of big companies are making Pittsburgh part of their expansion plans. Especially some of the well known tech companies.
And the medical system associated with Pitt is integrated within the general campus area.
U Massachusetts is more rural and the medical school is in Worcester. Only mention this because there are lots of employment and companies set up to into support the growing medical system in Pitt. And they all need communications people.
Of course UMass can help you get internship opportunities in Boston and the 128 tech belt. But there are so many more schools with students vying for these than in Pittsburgh.
There Pitt and CMU. And then there’s the rest.
Bottom line.
I think Massachusetts is a slightly better on campus, collegiate experience. The academics are equally good. And the internship opportunities will be better in Pittsburgh.
