I am just curious as to what this forum has to say about my situation. I am an intended English major with plans to take up either a double major or a minor in political science or philosophy. I have already been admitted into the University of Pittsburgh and Tulane University, and I will (hopefully) be accepted into American University in March. I am an aspiring writer and I want to know YOUR (Yes, you there!) thoughts about the three aforementioned schools. Thanks in advance for any feedback you may have!

If you have any interest in journalism, I’d go to American. Being in DC gives you great access if you want to a reporter or something like that.

Pitt and Tulane are also well respected schools, although I’m not sure which is better when it comes to english. Pitt has a very highly ranked philosophy program though.

Side note: I’m applying to all 3 of the schools mentioned, weird haha.

I am an English Writing major here at Pitt, and I will tell you that the English program is excellent and highly-ranked. So is Pitt’s philosophy program. I am also aspiring to be a writer, and let me tell you, the writing classes I’ve had so far are really fun, the teachers are excellent, and even my poetry class (I’m not a fan of poetry) is enjoyable. However, I don’t know anything about Tulane or American University, so you’d have to check on them.

My D is a Creative Writing major at Tulane (Well, English major with concentration in Creavtive Writing is how they do it), and is very happy with what she has experienced so far, although it is early. Tulane takes the same approach that a lot of famous authors seem to also subscribe to, which is that you have to be a great reader before you can aspire to become a great writer. So it is very literature heavy to start, and then there are a number of writing class choices that follow.

Poli Sci at Tulane is very strong, and it has always had a good reputation in philosophy as well, although I know less about the current state of things on that latter area. I have always heard really good things about Pitt and Writing also, and know nothing about American’s program. I think both New Orleans and Pittsburgh can be inspriring places for writing, although from very different histories and perspectives (I went to Tulane also and lived in Pittsburgh for 10 years, so I know about both).

So I think bottom line is both will offer you a great undergrad education and you should focus on the other factors. Which do you thinks fits you better? You know, things like size, weather, sports, overall setting and the campus, etc. Is one more affordable than the other, if that is a factor? Have you been able to visit either or both? That would be crucial I think, if you have narrowed it down this much. Good luck!
