Hi, has anyone received registration information for PittStart yet? I saw on the website that information on registering would be sent within 5 days of paying the enrollment fee, but that was over a month ago and still nothing. Thanks!

We’re still waiting too, and we paid the deposit online 1/31/11. The website isn’t updated either.

Has anyone else been called by PITT lately? The past two days they have called me but I couldn’t answer and am curious what they were calling for/about. Just wondering if anyone else was called by PITT and what it was about. Maybe about PittStart idk.

I get calls almost daily from Pitt Somekindof Association asking for money - but my son is a sophomore so not sure if that is what you are getting.

S1 got alot of calls when he was first accepted, just congratulatory courtesy calls offering to answer any questions.

TitanMom, thanks for the link. Would love to sign up now, but s1 still has not received a Student ID number from the school. Has anyone gotten one?

No, my son hasn’t gotten his ID either and we paid on 2/1/11…I’ll post when he gets it.

How does the dual major work?

Well, I figured out the student ID thing. There was a number on the email s1 got when he was notified about his application being received, an A followed by 7 numbers. I took a shot and used those numbers for the PittStart registration and it worked. Haven’t picked a date yet, have to talk to him first and see what will work.

mdye718- what are the dates for PittStart?

Is there any advantage going to an earlier session? My S is probably going to Pitt but won’t decide until 4/15 when we go to honors college day and the other schools have sent their decisions/packages. If all looks good, we’ll pay our $300 and commit. However, I don’t want him to be at a disadvantage by being on the back end of all this. Thx.

Last year, my D went to PittStart in July. She was able to fill her Fall semester schedule with classes that count towards her requirements – maybe not exactly the classes and/or times that she preferred, but it all worked out.

For PittStart, they say that they hold spots in sections so the last to register have something to pick from. PittStart sections run right up until school starts and those in the last group used to be able to move into the dorms early. DD’s suitemate opted for the last session two years ago and she got classes.

Does anyone know what sessions at Pitt Start are mandatory? Here’s the schedule…

Does anyone know what time PittStart finishes on the 2nd day? I know what the schedule says but wonder if it really goes until 5. I’m trying to decide if I need to book an extra hotel night Thanks

Nocashfored–it has been two years, but I seem to recall that the second day involved registering and the time we got out depended on the time assigned to register. So if you have a late appointment with the advisor, you will get out late.

For the scheduling appointments, the further you live away from PITT, the earlier your appointment. Those who lived close to PITT got the late appointments. Of course, things may have changed since son went through PittStart. I would call and ask – I am sure they can give you a ballpark idea of what time your appointment may be.

Just throwing this out there: When I went to my PittStart over the summer, our one-on-one advising sessions were scheduled randomly. My advisor literally held the appointment cards upside down and walked around to everyone in the group letting us randomly pick a card (which said the time of your appointment). So, I guess it depends on the way your advisor wants to schedule the appointments, but you probably won’t know when it is ahead of time. You may be able to trade or switch with someone though, if necessary.

Hello,

Pitttt is correct. Advising appointments are assigned randomly during the group sessions on the first day of PittStart. This past summer, many of the advisors had students choose a random card which designated their appointment time. The advising center does not assign appointments with regard to how close or far away a student lives from Pitt. It’s luck of the draw.

However, as pitttt also mentioned, many students are willing to trade and switch appointments if you give them a good reason to do so.

As far as what’s required, students are required to attend their group sessions on Day 1 and their registration appointments, which can occur on either Day 1 or Day 2. No student is allowed to register for classes until Day 2. After a student has met with their advisor, gone to a computer lab and created a complete schedule, they are free to do whatever they please. There are a variety of social activities offered that we encourage students to take advantage of. They are a great way to meet other incoming students. Additionally, students may want to explore Pitt’s campus with their parents or whoever else comes to PittStart with them.
