Is Provost Hyman really a possible candidate?

Had him for a class last fall... great guy + wonderful teacher!

He is, but I still like the Dean of the College.

Apple got Steve Jobs back in 1996 by purchasing his company NeXT. Perhaps Harvard should buy out another lesser Ivy (or perhaps MIT) and put their presidente in charge of the new uber-university.

I'd say that at the moment they are all disqualified either by age, temprament or educational background.

Guttman is Harvard-trained and was considered last time around; she is an outside possibility, although I'm not sure what the consensus is on her recent performance at Penn.

Previously, in a support role at Princeton, she was seen as something of the "power behind the throne" when the leadership cadre was converted to what some crusty old Tigers refer to as "the feminocracy".

The consensus is that Gutmann is a terrible public speaker but a great fundraiser and behind-the-scenes schmoozer. And you can guess which 2 of those 3 the Penn trustees care more about...

"Amy Gutmann was graduated magna cum laude from Harvard-Radcliffe College in 1971. She earned her master's degree in Political Science from the London School of Economics in 1972, and her doctorate in Political Science from Harvard University in 1976.

In 2003, Gutmann was awarded the Centennial Medal by Harvard University for "graduate alumni who have made exceptional contributions to society.

She is married to Michael W. Doyle, Harold Brown Professor of Law and International Affairs at Columbia University. Their daughter, Abigail, is a Ph.D. student in chemistry at Harvard University. Their son-in-law Jakub is a Ph.D. student in Business Economics at Harvard..."
