Will the placement examinations taken at the orientation affect anything? Like if I take one and failed it, would it have any negative consequences?

well it would PLACE you in a lower class, thus the term PLACEMENT lol

haha ok... well, the thing is, I took calculus AB last year as a junior. This year I was planning to take calc BC, but our school took it out of the cirriculum. So now I doubt I remember anything from calc AB anymore, after more than a year of no math. Would it be recommended for me to take math over again at UCLA?

You can place into a higher level of math depending on you AP Calculus AB score.

I got a 5, but if I do bad on the placement exam, would that affect anything?

Is this true?

I took the AP Calculus exam. So I don't need to take the math
placement exam unless I score below 3.

I took the AP English exam. So I don't need to take the English
placement exam unless I score below 4. But then again, I scored
more than 680 in SAT writing so I don't need to take the English
placement exam.

True?

what if i want to take spanish 1 , do i still have to do the placement?

1. I took the AP Calculus exam. So I don't need to take the math placement exam unless I score below 3.

According to the UCLA Orientation Program site,

Students planning to enroll in Math 1, 3A, or 31A for Fall Quarter must take the departmental diagnostic examination..

In addition, UCLA's math dept. states the following:

*In order to enroll in Math 31A, one of the following two conditions must be met:

The student's test result for the MDT is at least 60% correct (at least 36 out of 60); OR

The student has UC or specific transfer credit for Precalculus, Math 1, with a grade of C- or better. (Title credit for Math 1 does not suffice, nor does a score of 3 in the AP Calculus AB/BC Exam.)*

And:

There is no enforced requisite for Math 3B and 31B. However, it is strongly recommended that students who plan to skip Math 3A or 31A and enroll directly in Math 3B or 31B (based on their AP Calculus AB/BC Exam score of 3) still take the MDT, especially if they are unsure of their precalculus skills or if they are unsure whether they are entering the UCLA calculus sequence at the right level. The MDT result-sheet gives specific information on which precalculus skills the student should sharpen in order to be successful in calculus. Further, a passing test score will be required for switching if the student decides after the first week to drop back to 3A or 31A.

2. I took the AP English exam. So I don't need to take the English
placement exam unless I score below **3. But then again, I scored
more than 680 in SAT writing so I don't need to take the English
placement exam.** [True!

All incoming students must meet the UC Entry Level Writing Requirement before they can enroll in Freshman Composition and many other courses. You can satisfy this requirement in the following ways:

by earning a score of 3 or higher on the Advanced Placement (AP) English Language and Composition or English Literature and Composition exam.

by earning a score of 30 or higher on the combined English/writing section of the ACT Assessment.

by earning a score of 680 or higher on the writing section of the new SAT Reasoning exam, or on the old SAT II Writing subject test.

by earning a grade of C or better in a transferable college-level course in English Composition.

Also, to get out of the Writing I Requirement](http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/NewBruins/AWPR.htm):

Score of 4 or 5 on the College Board Advanced Placement Tests in English

Score of 720 or better on the SAT II Subject Test in Writing and superior performance on the English Composition 3 Proficiency Examination

Namaste, to answeryour question:

Students with one or more years of high school Spanish who plan to enroll in Spanish 1 through 25 must take the departmental placement examination.

I took the spanish placement test just today actually.

It's held in a computer lab, everything's multiple choice and computerized. No oral portion. I randomly answered about 90% of the questions without even reading them, and for the remaining 10% I more or less made educated guesses. My reason for this was that my Spanish is terrible, and I wanted to intentionally fail the placement exam so I could start from Spanish 1 and not be completely lost.

I ended up being placed into level 3...

Oh and yes, everybody who wants to enroll in any spanish course (even 1) has to take the placement.

^ are you nervous about taking such a high level of spanish, despite the fact that you only have to take that one class to fulfill the language requirement?

If you got 4+ on Either MATH AB/BC or or 4+ on Lang/Lit you don't have to take the placement tests.

"^ are you nervous about taking such a high level of spanish, despite the fact that you only have to take that one class to fulfill the language requirement?"

yea, i'm nervous. i mean, if i tested into spanish 4 i would clear the requirement and everything would be good. but now i have to take 3 despite basically not knowing any spanish and randomly answering the placement test. but on the upside, 1 quarter and i'll be done with it. im just hopign that one quarter doesn't screw me over

^ pretty odd that you got placed into spanish 3 with not knowing anything then. perhaps the test is really easy? good luck taking the class!

Okay, if I plan to major in biochemistry and I took up to Pre-Calculus in high school (actually, my highest level math course was IB math, but that doesn't really count for anything other than IB).

how important is the math placement exam to me? should i take it just in case?

thanks namaste, i would give you more info about what the questions were like, except i couldnt even read most of the questions.

if you didnt take any spanish in high school but plan to take it in college... do you have to take the placement exam?

yes you do, i think it's to prevent native spanish speakers or people familiar with the language from taking spanish 1 for an easy A

I took an AP foreign language test this year, so I won't know my results until orientation. Should I sign up for a placement exam, in case I didn't pass, and then if I did pass, just cancel it or not take it?

Also, how do they assign roomates for orientation? Completely randomly or if we're going with a friend, do we get to request living with that person?

it's most likely going to be completely random
