I am a parent and my son will be attending Pitt as a Freshman this Sept. I was curious about the placement tests.. what is it the school is looking for?
I understand there are placement tests in Math and English.
If one doesn't do well, what does that mean? Does it slow up their track for elective classes?
If one does well, what classes are they placed into?
Also, does one have to take a language placement exam if they took 3 years of a language in high school?
All info is greatly appreciated... thank you!!

I know for Engineering, if you had below a 600 on your CR SAT then you had to take the English test (for proficiency I suppose?). There are two math tests: One is basic algebra, the other is trig functions. If you do poorly in them, I think you MAY have to take a remedial algebra class your first semester (instead of Calculus).

If you do well, you get placed into a class based on any AP Credit you have (Calc II if you have AP Calc AB credit, Calc III if you have AP Calc BC credit, I think you need a 4 or 5 to receive credit.)

Some foreign language classes may require a placement exam if you wish to start at a higher level than the Intro class. If you have 3 years of foreign language on your HS transcript, then there is no need to take a foreign language class at Pitt (unless you want to).

As far as I know, Pitt does not have an English placement exam. At least, my D did not take one.

The Algebra placement exam is generally required if you don’t have at least a 600 math subscore on the SAT (26 Math ACT). A trig placement test is required for students planning to enroll in calculus. However, my D enrolled in Calc I the spring semester of her freshman year and no placement test was required. If you don’t have the minimum SAT/ACT score and don’t pass the algebra placement test, you will be placed in remedial algebra.

Pitt doesn’t require a language if you have taken 3 years on HS. However, if you are required or want to take a language at Pitt, you should take a placement test to determine the proper level to enroll in. More information about placement tests is at this link.
