I have placement testing tomorrow but don't know what to expect. Is the math one hard? I placed out of the english one (30+ on english part of ACT). Is it recommended to take the foreign language one even if I'm going into the Business school?

My son only had precalc in high school and the placement test placed him into calc 1. If you are convinced you won’t be taking a language, you don’t have to take the placement test. They like you to take it because if you change your mind and you want to take a language class, you now have to wait to take the placement test and it may not be offered at a convenient time for you.

oh alright. Thanks
The test was really easy and I opted out of taking the foreign language test (highly doubt I’ll ever take a foreign language again…)

my daughter also said the math was easy and a waste of her time. (& waste of mine, as she misread email and only thought it was a 1 hour test, not two 1 hour sections separated by a 90 minute lunch break!).

IMO they should establish a standard using SATII subject tests, rather than just giving credit for Calc if you got a 4/5 on AP Calc. She got a 3, which is passing and had 700+ on both regular Math SAT and MathII subject test.

I couldn’t agree more. They should have something like they do for the english part, but make it over 650 or 700 instead of 600. All of the concepts on the placement test were on the SAT…

a 3 on AP calculus AB or BC is not a credible standard for exempting from calculus at Rutgers. The mathematics at Rutgers is a very rigorous program and respected research in academia. Modern major universities, including those ivies, but not limited to, all want a 4 or higher.

In conclusion, a 3/5 on AP Calc is definitely not a passing grade, in Rutgers’ perspective.

The university also have done extensive research on this issue. Rutgers admit over tens and thousands of people every year, they know what AP score is considered ready for their mathematic programs, or any other programs in that matter.

SAT’s is in the lower end of the spectrum in terms of setting a standard. That’s why rutgers provide their own version of examination to test for proficiency.

I’m not suggesting they give her credit for it, only that a ‘3’ on BC calc should be a sufficient placement test criteria for what math she should take.

PS - for her intended major, she only needs a single semester of Calc, so it was a PITA to spend the entire day there to be told she needs to take Calc. (she SAT was high enough to not have to take the English placement test and no foreign language requirement).

i think they have their own standardized method so that they can be fair to everyone. most people don’t even get the opportunity to take BC in high school, so why should the people who did get an advantage?

plus, calc I for math/physical sciences (151) was no walk in the park.

I have a small question about placement testing and I didn’t want to make a new thread, so I’ll just post here.

I enrolled in the school of engineering for next fall and I’m just wondering if I’m supposed to register for placement testing right now on the enrollment pathway…? Because at the open house, the assistant dean guy said a packet would come in the mail telling us what to do, but I haven’t received one yet and testing is next month. So should I just register right now anyway?

arizonaicedt- they might recommend you choose a certain date so that you will have your placement testing completed by your engineering advising day. Do you know when that is?

arizonaicedT, this is how it went for me last year:

1 saturday, i believe may 1st, the first half of the alphabet in engineering took their placement tests. you go in the morning if you need to take reading+math, or you join the math session later in the morning to take just the math part.

the next saturday, the last half of the alphabet did the same procedure.

this all comes in the mail in a specialized booklet, you should get it very soon. there was no engineering advising, so this must’ve been a way to set all the dates and deadlines. i believe there was no formal registration for which day. because of my plans, i went to the first day even though i’m in the last half of the alphabet and there were no problems. it was just a way of organizing the engineers. after the math section you go to another room and get your ID picture taken :)

Actually, at the open house, the assistant dean said there is no advising day for engineering students because we’re all pretty much taking the same classes. He said the packet that’s being sent home acts as a replacement for our advising day. Weird, but that’s what I remember him saying.

And on the enrollment pathway, when I go to register for a placement test, there are two days specified for engineering majors (May 7 and 14).

So should I wait for that packet or register online right now?

Oh, wow haha. Thanks, drexeler! That helps sooo much. I guess I’ll just wait til I get that booklet in the mail. If I don’t get it by the end of the month, I’ll register for a day online. Mucho thanks, man.
