Placement tests at orientation

when i go to orientation in the summer, i know there are certain placement tests everyone is required to take. is language required and is the math and english hard? thanks.

I’m going to bank off this thread. Sorry diiii >_<
In any case, I’m a student going into SMG. Which tests are the ones that I need to take? I know that english and math are required. English is given at orientation but do I have to do the math and language tests on my own at home(online)? Do I even have to take language? Is there any way to bypass these tests? For example: the university of california system will waive the english placement test if you received a score of 680 or higher on the SAT1 writing portion of the test. Thanks alot! Sorry for the barrage of questions

First go to the orientation website and then you can check with your school. It’s not english, but writing that you take at orientation. Odds are you go into WR100 level no matter what.

Hmm. I tried to look for something related to the placement tests on the orientation website for SMG but all I found were schedules pertaining to the orientation dates. Aren’t the tests “university wide” for all students or there a difference? Does anyone know about this?

Go to the [actual orientation site](Orientation) for BU.

great! I am actually going to smg too so thank you for asking too

Hmm. I looked at the student schedule for the orientation programs but I only see a spot a specified time for a foreign language placement exam. I understand that the math exam is done online but is there a writing exam? I didn’t see any other times set aside for writing.

Here’s the link to the page I am referring to. Thanks!

[Welcome to Boston University’s Orientation Website](Orientation)

unless the grade has changed since i was a freshman, you can test out of the foreign language requirement by getting a 560 or better on the satII.

There is a writing exam. It’s either given on Wednesday afternoon if you get there early and want to take it or it’s on Thursday morning.

Update! I found out yesterday that incoming freshmen no longer have to take the BUWA. So no writing test.

well that’s good news! (I hate writing) hahah ty for the update bubailey!

Where did you hear that?

I was helping with an Orientation training.

The writing test simply assigned you to WR100. A few people got placed in WR150, but the vast majority go into 100. That means you select a class which is at that level. Most are literature courses of some sort.

Yeah, I think they changed it because basically everyone ends up in WR100.

I think international students still have to take the BUWA because there are WR097 and 098 for ESL students. Or is 28 in toefl writing enough to qualify me for WR100?

Worst case is you’ll show up and they’ll tell you. The changes aren’t important.
