Placement tests in Emory??

I'm unsure what I should do for the chemistry placement exam. I do not intend to major in chemistry (or any hard science). Also, I am not particularly good at math and science. However, I want to take a chemistry class in college because I enjoyed my AP Chem class in high school. I performed modestly on my SAT II for Chem, receiving a 650 -- though, I had taken that test 8 months after taking any chem.

Chem 135 sounds like it might be redundant for someone who has taken AP Chemistry. My question is, is Chem 141 exceedingly challenging for someone who has a rough background and interest in chemistry and a 650 on SAT II?

I want to know whether or not to even take the placement exam. I feel pretty confident that if I study for it within the next couple of weeks that I will be able to get into 141. But then again, if I'm not majoring in any science or math...what's the point?

The placement test has no impact on whether or not you can take Chem-141. I believe (I took 171, not 141) that the professors are just trying to see where everybody stands so they know if they'll need to emphasize certain subjects more. If you have taken AP Chem, I see no reason why you'd have any problem with Chem-141. It's an introductory level course, and you'll probably figure out fairly quickly that college classes are not appreciably more difficult than high school classes you've taken. The classes cover topics more quickly, but the material isn't really any harder or different.

what if a student did not take ap chemistry in high school and is pretty cloudy as far as the subject is concerned but still wants to do pre-med? would qualifying for the most introductory chem class at emory be an issue?

There's no such thing as qualifying for Chem-141. You sign up for it, and that's that. The placement test is irrelevant.

from the new packet

"IT MAY BE NECESSARY FOR YOU TO TAKE A COURSE BEFORE CHEM 141. In the spring of 2007, we will offer a new chemistry course: “Chemistry 135: Fundamentals in Chemistry.” If you do not receive a sufficiently high score the placement test, then you will take Chem 135 prior to enrolling in 141."

AND

"What happens if I have a score that is too low to enroll in Chem 141?

You will not be permitted to take Chem 141 in the fall of 2006. You will be required to enroll in Chem 135 in the following spring or the summer. Any student whose score is not high enough to take Chem 141 and still chooses to enroll in Chem 141 will be dropped from their instructor’s roster."

looks like it has an effect to me

This is just my opinion.

Assuming that you don't make whatever the cutoff score is on the 141 exam, just go talk to the professor about it. I know freshmen that took Senior Seminars just because the class looked interesting. Also, almost every class can be overloaded by 2 or 3 students, even though there is supposed to be a strict maximum for seminars. There are ways around everything at Emory. Talk to the professor who is teaching the class, the Director of UG education for that department, etc. etc. Just don't take no for an answer.

Anyone half-way competent at Chemistry can score fairly well on the placement test, if it's the same as last year's. I hadn't taken chem in 2 years, never took an AP science and am definitly not a science/math person.

Sorry about that. Previous to this year what I said was true since Chem-135 is apparently a new class. I'm not sure if that impacts the application process for Chem-171 because previously (3 years ago when I did it) we just took the placement test because the director of the chemistry department wanted everybody taking an intro level chemistry class to take it. We were still in the class regardless of what we got on it. I guess they might have changed the process so you might want to check on it.

I learned that Chem 135 does not even count toward one's GER. There is no way I would ever take it then. My assumption is that Chemistry 135 is designed for those who are interested in pre-med, but do not have a solid background in chemistry, whether it be because they went to a high school with an easy science dept or simply avoided chem altogether.

so if i don't place into chem 141, chem 135 doesn't count towards the GERs? ew that's pooey. hmm. gotta figure out a way around that.

this board has kind of turned from being about PE to chem, but I'm quite confused... I always considered PE to be the equivalent to gym-- playing soccer, basketball, etc. So at Emory it's actually a health class? Ughh.. I definitely never took health in high school, but I'll def take that test and try to cheat off the kid next to me :)

theres one health class, that u can test out of either way its 4 PE classes (one of them just might bein a classroom)>

it's really not that bad. i think they care about attendance but you can be graded on a s/u basis if you want. the other three classes seem like they would actually be fun. some of the choices are swimming, rock climbing, scuba diving, etc.
