Placement Tests

Hi guys! I recently registered for orientation but I had no idea which placement tests I need to sign up to take. I think that I have credit for writing (I got a 4 on my AP Eng Lang and Comp and just took Lit today) but I have never taken an AP Math test. Does that mean I only need to be registered for the math placement test?

Thanks for any help, I really appreciate it!!

The english placement test is usually done in your high school, not in UCLA. When I sign up the orientation, there was math, french placement test, and others (Spanish?). It was a radio button to make one selection, so I just ended up choosing Math Placement Test since I don’t know french and others. :]

found this,
[New Bruins - Qualifying Exams - UCLA Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/NewBruins/Exams.htm)

You don’t need to take any English placement exams (as long as you’re not held for ESL by admissions), since you got a 4 on the AP English test.

But yes, you do need to take the math placement test if you’re going to be taking math courses (i.e. if you’re a science, math, or econ major, or if you’re thinking about minoring in math or something like that).

I was under the impression that if you got a 4 or 5 on ap calc ab or bc you needn’t take a math placement exam?

If you get a 5 on AB, or 4 or 5 on BC, you don’t have to take it, since you get credit for 31A and move directly into 31B.

uh what happens if u get a 5 on calc ab n decide to take the math placement test anyways n u do very poorly on it. do u still get to enroll in 31B

hi! I’m a potential poli sci major and I hate math :))) so do I need to take the math classes which can only be taken by passing the Math diagnostic test?

@Drakelbob: Even if you take the placement test and do poorly, you’ll still get credit for 31A with a 5 on the AB test, so you can still enroll in 31B

@Fromcalwithlove: If you’re not going to do any kind of science minor or anything with econ (which requires Math 31A and 31B), it’s not likely that you’ll have to take math.

Yeah!!! that’s good to know UCLA2014! thanks :))

if i signed up for placement tests (math/french) and I find out later that I don’t actually need to take them, can i just not show up to take them during orientation?

I think so. I know for math, they don’t really care… not sure about French. I would imagine that it’s not a big deal; just let your Orientation Counselor know when you get there.

Or you could call in to the Orientation office (310 206 6685) and just let them know you don’t want to take it.
