Placement tests

My daughter is starting her freshman year this fall. According to the catalog, she has completed her math requirements for her major through dual enrollment in high school. We're confused about whether she needs to take the math placement online tests. We sent an email to the registrar's office but they could not give us an answer, other than "ask your advisor at Preview". I thought these placement tests were supposed to be completed before Preview. She's afraid that if she takes the test and doesn't do well on it, she may have to repeat Calc at UF, even though she has college credit for the class. Does anyone know if she needs to take the math placement test, or who we should contact to find out? This is all new to me so I'm not a big help to her. Thanks.

I remember reading somewhere that you can take the placement tests at preview (if you need to) before registering for classes.

You should contact the Math Department, jysmith@ufl.edu given that she is an advisor for preview and for the math department or www@math.ufl.edu they will tell you what to do.

if you’re confident she doesn’t need to take anymore maths, you don’t have to take the placement tests.

The test is very simple.

For example: 3 + 3 equals… (I’m exaggerating a little)

If she has taken calc or trig and did well in either, just tell her to take the placement. You could have probably finished the test in the same amount of time it took you to post this thread. Just tell her to take it, it will literally take her like… 30-40 minutes if she is decent at math. You only need like a 65% to get the top math placement anyway.

What’s the top math placement ^?

i forget the name exactly but its pretty much just calc 1. If you dont meet the minimum you are going to be placed in remedial which is trig/precalc.

If i have AP/IB credit for both Math and Chem, i don’t have to take the placement exams right?

if that math credit counts for the related classes and you don’t plan on moving forward in math and chem, then yeah

Aforautumn, would it make a difference if i did plan on moving forward in math and chem? Thanks :)

I remember my d was coming w/ AP calc b/c (5 score), which meant she could go into Calc 3, if she wanted. She still took the math placement test because for her major (chemE), she was to take the chem and math placement tests. She also had a 740 SAT II in chem, and a 770 SAT II in math. Life was just easier jumping thru the hoops and having all the requirements met. Would she have been able to avoid taking those placement tests, I dunno. She just took 'em. She said they were really easy, too. Again though, she started her freshman year w/ Calc 3 so keep that in mind.

zebes

Thanks zebes, I intend to start with Calc 3 and am thinking of majoring in Chem Engineering
