<p>I've been accepted into the aerospace engineering program at College Park for fall '08 and am going to orientation in July. My question is: other than the math placement test, are there any placement tests that engineering students take?</p>

<p>Our S took the Math placement test yesterday. He thought it was pretty easy and probably just a check to insure that freshman know the basics and don't register for a class that's over their head.</p>

<p>Yes, after much agonizing, the family made the decision that 200K more than UMCP was just too much of a sacrifice. S was scheduled to do beach week, Birthright to Israel and the Virgin Fest over the summer which didn't leave much time for making $. When it came down to it, the Banneker Key in Honors Humanities was too tempting to pass up:)</p>
<p>Yay!!! For everyone headed to orientation (students and parents), spend some time reading online about the math placement and how the results are interpreted into what class you should register for. I was SO frustrated as a parent, going through the parent orientation meetings, because there were SO MANY questions about this, and it goes in quite a bit of detail on UMD's site. You'll find out how you did at your meeting with your academic advisor at orientation, and that drives what math class you should take. If you have AP credit for Calculus AB or BC, that will drive your placement, superceding your placement test. However, I've seen it stated here on CC several times, I don't see a lot of value fighting to take a higher class that you are "placed" in. You don't need to put yourself in a position to be overwhelmed by your math class, right out of the shoots. D is a math/science geek; she's unofficially tutored several people on her dorm floor this year -- and has encountered several desperate souls. It's not worth it!</p>
<p>Math placement can be retaken, if needed. As a student here who has seen the agony of people taking calc 1, calc 2, and taken calc 3 myself, place out of as much math as you can! The workload for math classes here is pretty large.</p>
