I was wondering if anybody here got placed into remedial type courses when they took their placement tests at any ccc? I got into college math, college reading, but 1 level away from college writing. I guess this isn't too astonishing to me since I earned a 2 for my AP English Composition english test during junior year. I'm retaking the writing placement test in about two weeks and I was wondering how I can improve my writing? I'm already writing practice essays and having my friends proofread my essays, but I am still not confident in myself. Any ideas??

PS: Will this jepordize my chances at transfer into USC OR UCLA in two years?
I'm an incoming college freshman.

don't worry, a lot of people are in the same situation.

ONe thing that most CC do is they accept placement tests from other CC, so u can go take a test at another CC and bring them that one.

But if not, u'll have 2 years to take 3 english classes, which is more than doable.

don't worry.

Keep posting on cc believe it or not it has improved my grammar. Other ideas read essays that have been published, continue writing your practice essays but have preofessors, TA's, college's writng center people, or anyone who will impartial and subjective (friends tend to let things slide... believe me.) BUt yeah to echo 'schoolda's comment dont worry about it too much college is about improving your skills if you had no room for improvement then whats the point of taking all the english classes you'll be taking. I doubt it will jeopardize your chances at either SC or LA they know you have strong and weak points just be as flawless as possible in all your strong areas.

what kind of placement test is that. Most CC that i know have bunch of reading and gramar MC questions. No essays ever. Ur CC must be small if they have enough people to read essays.

Again, most CC will honor placement tests from other CC, CSU placements, and UC placements. So, i'd look into that

mt sac community college in walnut. very very big college with very decent transfer rates to UC's and elsewhere.

its all about organizing your essay the right way... once you have a map of what you want to say its just fill in the blanks...

What helps for me is making an 'A.C.B" thesis.....

Although clause
Your Clame
Because Clause (3 prongs)

for example

ALTHOUGH dropping the atomic bomb on Japan killed many people, (Claim)= it was nessassery BECAUSE, BECAUSE, BECAUSE

So each of your BECAUSE's would be one paragraph...

Obviously your thesis should be more analytical. If you can match your paragraphs to your thesis than a teacher will always give you at least a "B" as long as your argument is strong.

I hope that helped

Intro: Start broad, and narrow it down

Thesis: Make it compact and precise...

Paragraph 1 (because)

Paragraph 2 (because)

Paragraph 3 (because)

Conclusion: Do not just restate what has been said. Add your personal thoughts and ideas. What will happen in the future, what is the result of _____ etc.

thanks I'll make certain i organize my essay next time.
