Does anyone know the details on Columbia's placement tests to be exempted from certain courses?

bump...I'd like to know this too...a lot of my friends have been taking placement tests for their colleges...does Columbia offer any and when?

you take them during orientation week. You can be exempt from the music hum class, jump ahead on certain science classes, and others.

how hard is the musichum placement?

I read that if you want to take credit for AP Chem or AP Physics (it is physics, I think), you need to take a test during orientation to confirm that you could start at an advanced level. I don't know about you guys, but I haven't even thought about chemistry since junior year and I don't remember a darn thing; I'm going to be studying my butt off for that test during orientation.

I only recommend taking the orientation week placement tests if you're already at a high enough level of chem or music, etc. without needing to study. Being placed in an advanced level subject in your first-year for a subject you had to "study your ass off" during orientation is not worth it. Your first-year should be spent refreshing concepts, getting A+'s, and getting a solid enough base so your next 3 years won't be so much hell.

So go spend Orientation week meeting friends, partying, learning how to dance (this skill is absolutely MANDATORY in the successful Columbia social scene, haha), sign up for clubs, and starting to find your niche.

Those activities are absolutely important if you want the balanced (and the ideally HEALTHY) college academic/social life that Columbia can offer. If you start the year focusing only on academics, I swear to you that you will crash, living off of 2 hours a sleep a night, and thats not good.

and speaking of orientation week, audition for Raw Elementz!
