Placement tests?

I have taken Spanish throughout my HS years, except Senior yr. I stopped at Spanish IV. I don't plan on pursuing Spanish during college, but I don't want to have 0 opportunities to do so (I'm pretty fickle). Should I take the placement test?

I plan on pursuing Chinese instead.

If I take the test, does that mean I have to take Spanish at UVa?

As a first-year advisor, I always recommend that incoming students take the placement test in whatever language they studied in hs even if they plan to begin a new language at UVA. Say you take a semester of Chinese and find you hate it or are lousy at it; still, if you want to use Chinese to fulfill your language requirement, you’re locked in until the end of your sophomore year. But if you’ve meanwhile taken the Spanish placement exam and placed into, say, the second semester of second year Spanish (probably the commonest result for kids who’ve taken four years of hs Spanish), then you have the option of switching back to Spanish and finishing up your language requirement quickly.

Taking the placement test in any language does not obligate you to continue in that language. So you could take the Spanish placement test and then go ahead and take four semesters or more of Chinese.

Cool beans. Thank you so much! It definitely helped :D

Jingle,

If D has taken Latin I, II, III, IV, and AP does she still need to sign up for the placement test offered during orientation? She should receive her AP score at the end of June/beginning of July…should she receive a 5 (or 4) will she be exempt from further foreign language courses? (She plans on majoring in neuroscience/biology with a minor in psych.)

jc40, here’s a handy link for AP credit in CLAS:

[Advanced Placement (AP) Exam Credit — Undergraduate, College of Arts & Sciences, U.Va.](http://artsandsciences.virginia.edu/college/admissions/ap_credit.html)

With a 4 or 5 she would be exempt.

The AP score, if high enough, substitutes for the placement test.

Do you have to take a language at UVA?

Thanks, Jingle. I interpreted that from the website as well, but I just wanted it confirmed.
