Placement Testts

What'd you guys think of the placement tests? How much exactly does your performance 'count' when registering for classes?

I've only take Calculus so far, but I plan to take Chem and Spanish soon. Calc was... pretty hard for me. Considering my high school runs on a block schedule, and I haven't had a single math class for 5 months, it was rather tough.

I also thought Calc was difficult – and I take Calculus every day. It was just hard to get through a lot of it without a calculator. I ended up doing well, but it wasn’t without a lot of stress.

Spanish is a breeze. Seriously, it’s very, very easy. I contemplated taking the higher level one, that would put me in third year Spanish if I passed, but eventually decided against it. But if you speak the language decently on a regular basis, you should be more than fine for the EPT(? Think that’s what it’s called).

I’m nervous about Chemistry. I haven’t had any chemistry instruction in two years and remember absolutely nothing. I have a feeling I’m not going to pass. Maybe it’s for the best, as I probably could use an intro course, but it will be more embarrassing than anything else to see how poorly I do on the test.

I definitely agree. Had I had a calculator it would have been a lot less stressful, but I still did horrible. Although it sounds bad, I was pleased to see I got 4/7 trig questions correct. How about you, what were your two scores? 4/7 , 15/23 for me. Like I said, pretty rough…

Also, since we took the Calc test, we don’t have to take the other, lower level math test, do we?

Woo, thats reassuring! I think I will do well in Spanish, but the site isn’t working at the moment. Right now I am actually in a college Spanish class through the U of M, SPAN 1003, so maybe I’ll have an edge… Haha. Or maybe it means I shouldn’t take the placement test?

Again, I’m with you on the chem. It’s been a little over a year and half, and I am absolutely clueless. And, like you said, I’m just more embarrassed than anything else. We can be in the intro together! Hah.

There’s a Calc test? I had to take this Math Placement test. No calculus involved. It was extremely basic.

As for the Chem, that was weird. I think it was too simple to answer in some cases. I got 34/40 on that.

As far as math goes, I had two options but since I’m an architecture major they wanted me to take the Calculus one. I believe it all depends on your major.

i got 29 correct in the calculus…
but chem is going to be bad…
i never read chem since last year Nov SAT Sub test…

I still havent taken mine yet…I’m going to take math/chem the coming weekend though. I’m confused about the spanish test thing…which one do we take if we’ve been studying spanish throughout high school i.e not beginner?

I took the chem one about 2 years ago. It was kind of hard, but I also didn’t have chem for over 6 months so… I know they had a lot of focus on calculations and also stuff on the periodic table trends. Nothing too advanced.

Well, I took one that said “Calculus” but it involved no Calculus. : / If it counts for anything, I got 29/30. I missed some stupid trig question by being lazy. I knew it was funky but I didnt bother checking.

Chem is not bad, it’s just uber simple chem. If you took AP Chem or anything like that, it’ll over prepare you for sure XD

Re: the math placement test, I think which one you take does depend on your major. I don’t remember getting a choice, I was just automatically directed to the calculus one. I got 7/7 trig correct and a total 29/30 (I think there were 30 in all?). I’m happy.

Norabelle, as far as Spanish, you’re supposed to always take the EPT first, I think, and then if you score high pass on everything and think it’s really easy, you can take the LPE (again, the acronyms may be off a little) (also, I’m not sure, but I think you have to pay for the LPE). The highest class the EPT can put you in is 1004 (intermediate Spanish), so mozetti, you might as well not take it (I think it says on the site that if you’re enrolled in language classes at the U, they’ll use that for placement, anyway), since that would be what you go into next, regardless.

As far as chem… As soon as AP exams are over with, I’m just going to study and do my best. Thanks for the tip, sugar_sweet, as far as brushing up on periodic table trends. I’m pretty comfortable with calculations/stoichiometry, so at least that’s good.

What tests are you talking about ? Am I required to take some tests before the academic year starts ? What for ? Help me understand.

Kiwi; Did you send in your deposit to the U of M? If you did, about a week after you sent in your deposit, or so, you will receive something in the mail regarding the placement tests you have to take. It has to be done by May 31st, and it’s only so you are placed in the correct level of math/science classes.

Thanks mozzetti. Yes I sent in my deposit on the 30th.

I am not looking forward to any more tests really. Guess I will just have to suck it up. I have 5 AP tests coming up and I am not sure I am prepared too well.

does every incoming freshman take placement tests? im in CLA but im in the bfa acting program, do i have to take the placement tests?

Are these exams done online,or they just get sent over the mail?
Any international who has taken them?coz i kinda suspect internationals aint required to take em.

India; I’m almost positive every incoming freshmen takes at least the math placement test. You can take the chem / foreign language tests if you’d like.

Sez; Yes, they are done online. I’m not sure about internationals taking them or not though.

the calc test didn’t have any calc on it. i guess it makes sense, they want you to learn it there, so might as well test your basic hardcore math/algebra knowledge. the problems were fairly difficult without a calculator, but it’s manageble.

25 out of 30 and 6 out of 7 trig…not bad i guess.

good luck everyone.

GAAAAAAAAAAAAH!!!

i was JUST taking my math placement test and i clicked on “next” to go to question 27 (out of 30–i was almost done!!) and i get this stupid message!

what the heck!?!? what happens to my test now?!?

Hey guys, I’m trying to take the placement tests, but after searching all over the U of M website and through all the letters I’ve gotten, I STILL can’t find the link to take placement tests.
