Generally speaking, how do you determine your placement in college courses? Are there placement exams for everything? If you don't have AP Credit, must you start at the lowest level? I'm specifically concerned with French, Latin, Italian, chemisty, math courses..calculus.

It depends on the school. Most schools will, if you don't have equivalent AP credit, require you to sit for a placement exam. Now don't freak out, the purpose of these exams is to make sure your adviser places you in to the right courses for your level, so if you're ready to take calculus III, you don't register for Precalculus, or if you should be taking advanced Writing, you don't register for Introduction to Writing. At most schools, you most likely would be taking exams in English, Math, and foreign language. Now as for foreign language, you would be taking an exam in the whatever language you took in high school if you want to continue studying it in college, if not, you can take a new language from the beginning.

I had AP credit for chem & calc, but I still had to take placement exams for both. It's been awhile, but I think there were placement exams for languages also that I elected not to take because I wasn't going to take language courses.

Generally speaking, most schools will probably have placement exams to determine what course or series your need to take.
