Places for B (A-?) students

Hello all..

I'm basically trying to get recommendations of schools to apply to that are outside the state of florida.. basically in areas like Boston.. northern virginia, ..etc

The major I plan on pursuing is E/Computer Engineering.. possibly with a minor in accounting or finance.

Also... I'd really like the school to be generous with need-bases grants :) Havent done FAFSA (since it's not jan1) but my EFC will be pretty low

The one school I was looking at was Northeastern.. but it's REALLY expensive, this is #1 on my list of choices because of their excellent co-op program and.. Boston of course!

But without further adu, here are my stats:

High School GPA: 3.6 W / 3.3 UW ( i think)
College GPA: 3.57 (dual enrolled.. taken most of the gen-ed requirements)
no ranking( school doesnt rank)
SAT: 1110 CR(550) + Math(560) / 1670 including writing (wee)
urm (black male)

classes:
i've taken a bunch of general college courses to knock them out of the way (fresh english 1 & 2, about 3 math classes, taking chemistry next semester)

ECs:
Church Youth Group
Computer / Lan Party Club
Computer tutorials at retirement center
(does this count: I used volunteer to be in charge of all the boys basketball teams statistics)

Work Experience:
Throughout my high school years i've had a total of 4 (including 1 internship) jobs to help supplment our household income. Currently I'm a junior systems engineer for an IT consulting firm here (I mainly maintain the networks and linux servers)

oh, btw, the schools I applied to are the usual florida schools.. UF, FSU, UCF

bump

???

hello, good day.

over here its actually "good night".

it's night in the 60's?

yes. partly cloudy with a chance of showers.

hi five for that one hilary. that was a gem.

thanks milesguidon. i did feel pretty clever as i typed it.

The_Who...would that be acid rain?

no just h20 flavored rain.

zing zing zingaroo

.confused.

so i'm glad we helped you out finding good places for b (a-) students.

jeez,

thanks for totally hijacking my thread and making it useless. really.

if anyone has any insightful information please dont be discouraged to respond

George Mason U, Northeastern U, colleges like those, I would think could be good for you.

There is a thread on the Parents Forum with precisely this topic; lots of ideas there!

I think he has better stats though then just a "B" student. I actually have similar stats and got into all the schools I applied to (mostly state schools). Northeastern is pretty much a reach, but dont let that discourage you. Everyone on here told me schools were reaches and I got into them. Reaches dont mean you wont get in, your stats just fall behind their averages.

I say your best shot is probably FSU, but I still dont know if youll get in. You need to make a list of safety schools to know that youll get in to those at least. Your biggest plus is being african american, which could get you in since you seem pretty borderline

sarit_om, SBmom, jethro,

thanks. ill check out that thread over in the parents forum

jethro, my two safety schools were UCF and FSU.. shrug

i'm about 80% done with my northeastern app (started it about a month ago).. it's just so.. expensive and i hardly have a chance at getting merit scholarships from any schools

how about American in DC?

We did cover a lot of this on the parents forum- so you will get some ideas. If you do want some public U's in the Va/DC/Md area, you should look into George Mason- Towson- Univ. of Md. -Baltimore County (?) also main campus in College Park. Even though these are public U's, the OOS tuition is still around $16,000-$18,000. NY State schools are less expensive (about $11,000) If you want info on SUNY schools too-- just ask. For some kids it may be less expensive to go to a private U as there may be more financial aid offered. I'll agree with huskem that American U may be a place to look too. Your Florida schools are good choices. You gotta decide whether it is worth the extra $ to go outside the state U. system. Good luck

UCF, yes. FSU, probably. UF, there's a slight chance, but mostly a reach. I'd say Northeastern and maybe Villanova.
