Places that hire 15 year olds?

Does anyone know any businesses that hire at 15?

I’ve found that most places don’t hire until 16 because before then, they have to go through the whole work permit process which means extra paperwork.

Basically nowhere. Tutoring companies like Kumon do for marking though, I think.

Check local places. There is a local fast-food chain and a regional supermarket chain that will hire at 15 around me.

My kids all worked concessions at area soccer and baseball fields.

Thanks everyone, I tried applying to some local places but my choices are really limited not only because of my age but because the place has to be within walking/biking distance since I don’t have my permit yet. I’m not expecting to get hired but I guess it’s worth a shot.

My D has had trouble finding a job for this summer because a lot of the chains use an online hiring process, and you have to be 18 to even fill out an application! She turned 18 in early April and just heard yesterday that she has an interview with a coffee shop chain tomorrow…

If you don’t end up with a paying job this summer, see if you can volunteer someplace. That gives you something to put on your applications/resumes in the future.

You might try making up flyers for babysitting, dog walking, and yard work, and passing them out in your neighborhood.

Thank you! I’m going to try applying to my local library tomorrow since the librarians sort of know me and I’ve volunteered there before. Fingers crossed…

This is why it’s advantageous to start school late. I wish I were 18 in Junior Year like some of my peers…

^ Same, my birthday’s right at the end of August so I won’t even turn 18 during senior year.

I know McDonald’s (at least the one I work at) is always desperate for people. As long as you have a work permit you should be fine. However, I hate working there and don’t recommend fast food… I was desperate for a job, I’m not sure if you are or not.

I agree - sports complexes are pretty easy to find a job before you turn 16. I have a couple of freshman or younger friends that work as soccer refs/trash collectors/ball boys, that work at the driving range, selling concessions at the baseball fields, etc. Also you can look into bagging groceries.

Most fast food places I had a hard time getting a job at 16, let alone 15, so I wouldn’t bother too much unless you have a connection.

Babysit. Look for the American Red Cross’s babysitting class which teaches essential skills such as CPR. You can work as a mother’s helper at first (parent in the house at all times) until your first client is confident enough in your abilities to allow you to stay with his/her kid unsupervised. Once you have a client or two, your opportunities will take off because you will be able to use your client base as references.

My daughter got a job at age 15 because she wanted to study abroad while still in high school and we told her that she had to make a significant amount of the cost to do so. She got a job baking and being a barista at a local coffee shop. She had to get a permit to do so (working with the high school and teachers and the coffee shop) but she was motivated so she did it.

Just working at getting a job and dealing with the bureaucracy of getting a permit was a good education for her. She still works there now that she’s a freshmen in college (living at home…another lesson in dealing with money).

I babysit quite a bit, but it’s hard to get regular work and I struggle with the late nights when I have a lot of other stuff going on.

I think the issue is that companies would have to do a criminal record check on every employee if they have under 16s working there. So unless they do that anyway because of the specific work (like tutoring) it would cost them a lot more.

Around here, the local amusement park.

I work at a local martial arts studio, which is a really cool job, especially for a high school freshman. Granted I am a 3rd degree black belt and the owner is also my master for nearly 10 years. You could intern at various places, you wouldnt make money, but it would help you later.
