Are there any special sites that offer discounts on laptops to college students? Also, does the school you go to affect the discount you receive at certain sites? And, will there be a big difference between prices now and prices in August? I'm interested in either an HP (Pavilion or Envy) or an Asus, so will those two brands have any special discounts for students/upcoming sales?

Apple has the annual summer promotion for college students buying a Mac.

$100 off the laptop education discount that they always have, plus $100 off a printer, and $100 iTunes/Mac App Store giftcard. I got mine last week.

I don’t know about deals on the brands you mentioned…have you considered a Mac? A lot of people get them for college with Apple’s promotions, don’t know if you’ve heard about the promotion.

Don’t get Mac :D

^Mac is great for college!

Ok, let’s not start this discussion.
PC’s are better for engineering and gaming
You should at least consider a Mac if you don’t like either of those.

Macs are out of the question since my budget is around $800. I wanted switchable graphics because I was hoping I could get my laptop over the summer and play some games on there (WoW). Asus and HP stood out amongst the competitors. I’m in between the HP Envy series and the Asus K and U series.

Does your school have a computer store? We got a great deal and an extended/better warranty from the school’s computer store.

logicbuy.com has the best deals for computers and many other items

If you look around, I’m sure a lot of places have discounts for college. Try searching online for those computers you’re interested in and see where you can get it for cheap.

most colleges have a technology store that offers student discounts on a wide variety of computers and software.

Depending on what you want to buy, it may make sense to look around - The school where D will attend in the fall is a Dell school with pretty good prices (volume discount) on some configurations; not what we wanted - I get Dell discount from work; no good; wife gets HP discount from work; see Dell; at the end a Lenovo T420 thru Lenovo student pricing was cheaper than the Dells.

The volume discount price was awesome for desktops, but for laptops they added in $300 worth of ‘insurance’ and warranty upgrade that could not be opted out of (I wanted 2 years).

Look at a computer manufacturer’s website…many will have a special section for college students, where a discount of 10-15% is applied (Dell, HP, etc.).

These discounts are on computers of your choice and are valid as long as you have a .edu email address from anywhere. For example I got 15% off my Alienware m17x from dell, and I think 10% off a tablet/slate type laptop from HP – both were configured totally by me.

Many colleges may have deals with specific places, but this is usually meaningless and a smaller discount than just going to the manufacturer’s website.

As for software, many colleges are enrolled at onthehub.com, where you can get software like Windows 7 OS or Microsoft Office 2010 anywhere from free to $100 (price depends on the school’s agreement with onthehub)
i.e. At Wash U where I go, non-engineering students can get Office 2010 premium for $84 with 3 licenses, engineers can get it for $7 with 3 licenses.

Some of the best prices I have seen are from the ToshibaDirect.com
on their “sign up for special deals” They have decent prices to start
with and regularly offer coupons for $200-$300 off, free upgrades etc.,
Its usually limited to a few hundred machines, so shop first and snag one when
a good coupon hits.

Another - rather limited but free - program for anyone with an edu account for software is Microsoft’s DreamSpark initiative. They do give away some nice software incl. Visual Studio 2010 (niiiiice), Windows Server 2008, and so on.

Google Microsoft DreamSpark for details.

For select laptops only, see terms and conditions before buying. Remember, you can probably find better coupons/promotions on the web.
