Places to go around Berkeley/Bay area

So I'm driving up to Berkeley on Friday with my family from southern california and my family wants to visit places around the Berkeley/Bay Area before moving-in.

Are there any particular places we should go see?
Good places to sight-see?
Restaurants to eat at, shop, etc?

If anyone could help, I'd greatly appreciate it.
Thanks.

does san francisco count?
golden gate, fisherman’s wharf (pier 39), shop at union square, get sundaes at ghirardelli square, take a cable car :)

well berkeley is obviously a must. visit your unit, go to the “Durant Food Court” (coughcough Asian Ghetto), walk around Sproul, look at Sather’s Gate, see Memorial Glade, and just walk around the campus.

SF is the only other exciting place here – pretty much what flutterfly said for SF and you also may want to visit Chinatown/Japantown, Coit tower, drive up the steep hills, take a ferry to Alcatraz if you have the time

Just eat calamari and clams from fisherman’s wharf while watching them seals on pier 39. like, for the whole night. they’re so entertaining. at least for me.

Cheeseboard, Mission District in SF for mexican food, north beach for cool stuff and making fun of strip clubs.

Just stay away from Hunter’s Point. The Tenderloin is apparently a ghetto but it’s disneyland compared to most of Baltimore etc

cheeseboard qfe

SF is good and an obvious one. I guess the good parts of Oakland (Jack London Square for one) aren’t a high priority.

There’s a beach? where?
What about Lombard St. and Haight-Ashbury?

Lombard St is pretty blah and good for one visit. Haight is p much a tourist trap now but good if you like being surrounded by hipsters.

Jack London Square is pretty blah. The only reason to go there is the Chicken and Waffles place which is basically a rip off of Roscoes (literally)

thanks for all the suggestions.
now i just have to plan out the day.

Jack London Square has an awesome Farmers’ Market on Sundays (9am-2pm). There is also Miss Pearl’s and Yoshi’s, and historic Heinold’s First and Last Chance Saloon.

Really, not enough to plan a day around, but a good brunch/explore option. Unless someone really likes jazz, in which case it’s good to plan a dinner!
