I will be visiting UNC for about a day and doing the information session/campus tour and I would love some suggestions of places to visit that I might not see on the tour. Any suggestions of restaurants or must-see stops to get a real feel for UNC and Chapel Hill would be greatly appreciated.

try the suggestions here: [Perfect Carolina Visit](http://www.admissions.unc.edu/Visit/Perfect_Visit/default.html)

The Morehead Planetarium show is actually very good. If it’s cool enough, have lunch at Top of the Hill outside overlooking Franklin street. The art museum, can’t remember it’s name - is good. The basketball museum is also supposed to be good - although we haven’t made it there yet. Just walk up and down Franklin street. Everyone loves “yo po” the Yogurt Pump, not sure why, but it’s always a stop for students. Just walking the campus, through the pit by the union, the old well … as a freshman you will probably be on south campus, so walk south to north and realize how far your walk will be every day, or catch a bus. So many great restaurants, just search other threads for those ideas.

Thanks for your help. Anybody else have suggestions??

Dean dome/basketball museum
Franklin Street

If there’s a basketball game on the day you visit, I highly recommend that you try to go. There’s usually scalpers selling cheap tickets on south campus.

Since I will be going in the summer attending a basketball game won’t be possible, but does anyone know if the football stadium and/or basketball arena are open?

I second Morehead. I would also visit Wilson Library (actually go inside, they didn’t take me inside during my tour), Graham Memorial, the arboretum, the bell tower and Gimgoul Castle (yes, it’s an actual castle owned by one of the secret societies on campus).

The football stadium will be open, and the basketball museum is down at the Dean Dome so you have a good chance at getting in there too. Have an awesome time!

hahaha, this might help

Where is the Gimgoul Castle? Is is open to visit?

Gimghoul Castle is actually private property and not open to visit. It is hard not to look like a total creeper if you go sneak around it, but a lot of people do. The castle is located in the historical Gimghoul neighborhood - if you walk down the neighborhood street you reach a gravel path that leads to the castle and loops around. Tons of people run/jog/walk in this neighborhood because it’s so pretty, so that’s a good excuse to check out the castle. The neighborhood should show up on a campus map (it’s right down the street from the Forest Theatre). You could at least do a drive-by!
