Places to Stay

I’m trying to make plans for next month when my daughter will have to come down to Alabama for cheering tryouts - if she makes the decision this week that this is where she wants to go! Co-ed cheer tryouts are on Thurs. April 5 - Saturday April 7 and all girl tryouts are on Saturday April 14 - Tuesday April 17. If she makes co-ed then she would be done but if she doesn’t she has to come back the next weekend for all girl tryouts - she has never cheered co-ed but wants to tryout out because that is the team that competes and she wants to compete. We are coming from NJ so it makes no sense for us to go down and come back and then have to go down again so we are thinking of bringing our motorhome and going to stay on the Gulf in between tryouts. We are also thinking of driving and staying in a hotel near campus during tryouts, going down to the Gulf and staying in a hotel there and then coming back up for tryouts the next weekend and staying again near campus. So does anyone have any suggestions for a good place to stay near campus and also on the Gulf in a hotel? How about a campground or state park in case we bring our motorhome? Thanks!

Hoover(Southern suburb of B’ham) has an RV park(45 min-1 hour, depending on traffic). There is also Tannehill State Park between Tuscaloosa and Hoover. There could be something closer but those are the two I know about.

I’m guessing that while you’ll want to be close to campus right? I think Hoover might be too far away. Will you need “hook-ups” or just a place to park over-night?

I’m not sure what you prefer…

Do you prefer to stay in a hotel while actually in T-town and then have some RV park options if you go down to the gulf?

I have no personal experience with campgrounds yet, but I’ve been researching them. You might want to check out rvparkreviews dot com if you haven’t already. Near Tuscaloosa there’s a COE campground (deerlick creek) and COE parks tend to be quite nice. There’s also Lake Lurleen state park; we probably won’t stay there because you can’t reserve the exact site and our MH is very long and won’t fit in many sites at older parks. If you end up taking the MH please post where you stay both near campus and on gulf and how it works out.

re gulf shores the holiday inn express orange beach is nice…but as it is spring break, you may have a hard time…there arent that many hotels on the beach. alot of the condos are booked already too but you could check out meyerre.com for condos… pm me if you like

KarGaro…FYI…the A Day Game is Saturday April 14th…T-Town will be packed!!! If you are looking for a hotel room that weekend you might want to call ASAP. I will be there for A Day and Mom’s Weekend at my D’s sorority. I booked a room in December. Good luck with it all…fingers crossed that her tryouts go well!!!

Thanks everyone! We aren’t sure which way we are going to do this yet! I’m going to look at the costs of (A) us flying down and staying for the week in a hotel near campus for tryouts and at the Gulf in between and (B) coming down in our motorhome and staying in a campground near campus during tryouts (and renting a car) and at the Gulf in between. BethsMom - our motorhome is pretty long too so we can’t stay in the older campgrounds with small sites either and I definately want full hookups.

Karen, I think Deerlick Creek is W/E only. Not a problem for us because we carry a tote tank for gray water. I think there are some sites at Lake Lurleen that have W/E/S. If it’s not a crowded time there might not be a problem with getting one of their longer, FHU sites. Probably worth a call if you decide to take the motorhome route.

There’s an RV park with full hookups in the east part of town, near the Wingate and the Cracker Barrel.

Hi again - we have priced everything out going different ways and we are going to be driving down to Alabama and staying in town April 4 - 7 for co ed cheering tryouts and then leaving there and heading down to the Gulf Shore April 7 - 13. We will then come back up to campus April 13 - 16 for all girl cheering tryouts and then head home.

I have plenty of recommendations for hotels in Tuscaloosa. I’m looking for a condo rental on the Gulf shore - does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks!
