What are some of the places that are on campus that good for studying? Oh and one more question, does the CMA communications building have a library??

There are like a million little single person cubicles on all of the silent floors of the PCL library. I think people use those.

I just used my dorm’s study lounge. We all treated it as totally quiet no group work allowed type of a room, and I could always get my reading done in peace.

No CMA does not have a library.

You can study anywhere. I like PCL third floor in the corner somewhere with a plug or the 6th floor near a plug. But during finals/midterms it’s super packed in PCL. I had to sit in between the stacks just to get a plug during finals.

PCL is always a good choice, I find, but the only issue is there are always a ton of people there. It is still quiet, however, except on the talking floor. I would suggest bringing a power cord if you go to PCL with a laptop because there are very few outlets. I’ve spent many nights sitting on the floor in between bookshelves because I needed an outlet.

The library in the Tower is also a nice quiet place to study, as well as in Jester (you can study in the lobby of Jester West at almost anytime, and there are tables on the 2nd floor of Jester Center) if you don’t need 100% quiet time.

If you are in the dorms you should have study rooms or, as a last resort, the laundry room on your floor to go to (which is nice for late-nighters because you are already near your room)

The architecture library is really quiet and beautiful so I found that pretty relaxing. The Union is a good quiet place to sleep or study, it just needs more outlets. My favorite study lounges are Duren’s piano room when no one is playing and jester west’s newly renovated silent study lounge in the lobby. The Student Activities Center (SAC) is being built next to gregory gym so I’d bet that that will be a great place too. Another good place is the PCL, on the 2nd floor (the floor you come in on) straight toward the back is a well lit big room, and also secluded corners of the quiet floors where ever I could find an outlet.

If you live in Jester or any dorm with a closed off study lounge, this is one of the best places to study. I lived in jester where there are 3 study lounges on each floor. They are never full; i had one to myself 85% of the time. It’s really convenient to study there at night (so you don’t have to walk far back to your room at 1am). If you live in Kinsolving, i do not recommend studying in there. there are no doors to the study lounges, so there are lots of distractions. the 2.5th floor in kinsolving is good if you get a room, but they are usually full by 6 or 7 (just after dinner). i found it hard to concentrate in the big study room; there was a tv, pool table, and ping pong table in the same area.
PCL 4th and 6th floors are nice and quiet. They’re not very busy either (except during finals).
The FAC first floor is great for group study. they also have a few computers for anybody to use.

PCL 5th floor
Starbucks near 24th & Guadalupe (on the porch when the weather is nice)
Any engineering building lol

Life Sciences Library in the Tower is a nice and quiet place to study as well.
You can also study in the Texas Gallery of Great Women (or something like that) in Kinsolving. It’s very quiet there as most people are studying.

The Joynes Reading Room in Carothers is quite nice and quiet.
Union 3rd floor is nice also, though the chairs they have in there are a bit too comfortable for me to be productive… haha … plus, it’s not a designated quiet area, so every now and then people will walk through talking with their friends, etc… I was studying there earlier today when this guy started talking to someone on the phone VERY loudly and I had to leave. (in Dutch, haha… gotta love UT)
The PCL is full of study carrels. It is very quiet and I have the feeling that you could really get some work done there but I found it to be depressingly sterile. Plus, I get lost every time I walk in the door.
The Life Sciences Library is nice too (and it’s beautiful), but it seems like it was kind of loud when I was there because the area right outside isn’t really a quiet area (seminar rooms, etc).
(mind you, I’m a first year student… these are just the places that I’ve gone to do my reading so far)

oh interesting i already found a nice area in kinsolving in the 2 1/2 floor. But I’ll check those other places out. PCL seems to be a bit too far for me. The union looks interesting. PCL always seems to have a freakload of people, at least in the first floor i never been anywhere above the first floor.
