I've seen AP Credit/Placement tables that generally allow students to place out of language requirements if they get a 4 or a 5 on AP Exams (6 or a 7 on IB) and occasionally a 760+ doing the trick on the SAT II. I can't seem to find such a chart for Columbia, but I'd imagine it hold true.

Does anyone have any definitive evidence either way?

is it possible to place out if you’re fluent in the language but don’t plan on taking the ap test/sat II? i’ve heard there was a language placement exam you could take there at orientation… is that true? thanks!

Yes, you can take a language placement exam. All the dates and locations are going to be in your schedule that you get at orientation. Some languages will require you to speak with a person in the department to completely place out of the language requirement after you demonstrate your ability on the test.
