How can you place out of a class at carolina? I know that you can use Ap credit or SAT scores, but what about studying before the class starts and then placing out of the class?

CLEP, maybe?

I know as far as english courses, my SAT writing isn't high enough to place out of english 102 (got a 670) so there is a test on Aug. 22 where you can place out of the class. I do find it ridiculous that they take in account SAT writing over say the AP test (which, if you get a 5 on- which I did- you are placed into 102 but not placed out of it) or critical reading. The writing section is useless!

What do you need on the writing section to place out of english? I didn't know that they used writing for anything.

At least a 680 on the writing section of the SAT will place you out of English 101 and 102.

Help! I didn't take the SAT II for math because i didn't think i needed it. Now it seems like they are saying you do. I'm taking AP Calc and feel confident I'll get at least a 3. Will they let me sign up for the higher math before those scores come in? Anyone else in the same boat?

Math
During orientation, students are required to submit one of the following to ensure they are placed in the appropriate level math course:

a math test score,
an official college transcript reflecting any college courses taken while in high school, or
an official college math course credit evaluation form from the Office of Undergraduate Admissions.
Accepted Math Tests

During orientation, students are required to submit a math test score or an official math credit evaluation form from the Office of Undergraduate Admissions to ensure they are placed in the appropriate level math course. Many majors at Carolina require a quantitative reasoning course that you will not be allowed to enroll in without an appropriate placement score (e.g., math and natural sciences, business, health professional fields).

While the SAT Subject Test, Math 2 is typically used to determine your math course placement, the following exam scores and courses CAN ALTERNATIVELY BE USED to determine your placement and college course credit:

AP Calculus AB exam - if you scored a 3 or higher, you will receive credit for Math 231 and may enroll in Math 232 if needed.

AP Calculus BC exam - if you scored a 3 or higher, you will get credit for both Math 231 and 232 and may enroll in Math 233 if needed.

AP Calculus AB or BC exam - if you scored a 2, you will not get credit for a calculus course, but you will be exempted from Math 110.

IB (HL) Math exam - if you scored a 5 or higher, you will get credit for both Math 231 and 232 and may enroll in Math 233 as needed.

SAT Subject Test, Math 1 – this exam may be taken instead of the Math 2 exam if you do not want to take Math 231 as your first course at Carolina.

AP Statistics exam -- if you scored a 3, you will get credit for Statistics (STOR) 151. If you scored a 4 or higher, you will get credit for Statistics (STOR) 155. Note: Credit for STOR 151 or 155 does not give you Math 110 placement.

Dual enrollment – if you completed a dual enrollment or other college math course with a C or better, be sure to send your official transcript to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions as soon as the transcript is available so that it can be evaluated for credit before orientation.

Information on Placement for Incoming Students - Undergraduates

Students entering the University as freshmen who intend ever to take Math 110 [10], 130 [30], 152 [22], or 231 [31] are required to take the SAT Subject Test, Mathematics Level 2, before the end of their senior year of high school. Students should have their scores sent to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Office of Undergraduate Admissions so that they will be available for placement purposes during summer registration. Students who do not have scores will not be entitled to register for the above courses.

Note that Math 116, 117, and 118 satisfy the General Education QR (Quantitative Reasoning) requirement and are open to all students.

Scores on the test range from 200 to 800 and determine one of three placement levels as follows:

SCORES
COURSES

200-510
Math 110 10

520-590

or Math 152 22

600-800

NOTES:

The SAT Subject Test, Mathematics Level 1, cannot be used for placement into Math 231 [31]. It can only be used for placement out of Math 110 [10] with a score of 520 or higher.

The subsidiary level (SL) version of the International Baccalaureate is not accepted for credit at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

While a score of 2 on either AP calculus examination does not give course credit, it does grant exemption from Math 110 [10].

Also, look at an academic advising worksheet(s) for your intended major or majors you are interested in pursuing. Many majors don't require Math 231 or 232 (the calcs). For instance, Kenan and School of Public Health have specific requirements that allow certain Statistics courses be substituted for Calc courses and visa versa.

Looking over these worksheets prior to registration will help you understand the new Gen Ed requirements and make your registration process a lot simpler.

Thanks for the info. I'm really confused bc at explore carolina they told me i didn't have to have sat IIs but the stuff you quoted sure looks like you do.
Then I found this in the 2007 registration handbook which seems like I'll be ok with my Ap scores! Ugh!

"All students must take or receive credit for one Quantitative
Reasoning (QR) course. Some QR and major prerequisite courses
require MATH 110 placement; others do not.We recommend that all
students have the SAT Math Subject Test score on record for math
placement, since several majors at Carolina require a quantitative
reasoning course in which you will need an appropriate placement
score. A score of 2 or better on the AP calculus exam will give MATH
110 placement. If you do not have your test results but feel confident
about your placement, you may enroll in a math course at CTOPS if
needed in the first semester. It will be your responsibility to make
sure you are appropriately enrolled based on your placement
score at the start of the fall semester."

I intepret the above info at the links to mean the following:

If you have adequate AP exam score, you're good for credit and placement into the Calcs depending on the exam (AB vs. BC) and your score.

If you do not have an adequate AP exam score, and you want placement into Math 231 (Calc I), you will need an adequate SAT II Math Level 2 score.

If you take SAT II Math Level 1, you CAN place out of Math 110, but not into Math 231 (Calc I).

Also, I believe you cannot get actual credit for the courses you place out of unless you take the AP exam.

Anyone else getting the same thing I'm getting??

Sorry to interrupt anything but if you have over a 680 (over 690 maybe?) on the writing portion of the SAT...do you have to submit a portfolio or something to get exempted out of English 101 and English 102?

^ no... 10char

On the math question.. I'm worried about the timing. I'm taking the Ap calculus AB exam and hope to score well enough(nobody at our school has scored below a 4 on it, hopefully I don't start a new trend!) to place into 231or 232 but I won't have those scores for ctops in June. Do you think the previous post means I can still register but it will be pending those Ap scores or I can't registar at all for math without scores?

Cat11, I looked at the website. It says you have to have a 690 to place out of English 101 AND 102..... I got a 680 so thats why I am asking
