Do the college admissions officers ever check? I’m concerned about this issue, especially when colleges receive thousands and thousands of essays.

I am sure it happens.

Do college admissions officers ever check? probably.

Do they usually check? definately not.

Considering the small amount of time admissions officers have to spend with any given application, in is not at all feasible for them to check each for plagiarism - and even if they would, what would they check the essays against? If a student posted an essay that they planned to send to a particular college, and a student, applying to a different college decided to copy parts of this essay, it would be near impossible for the admissions officers to catch the plagiarism.
There is no realistic way to prevent this entirely.

in order to catch out such a cheat, the source would have to be known to the adcom. you're more likely to win the lottery, than get caught stealing from another applicant.

do the UCs keep track of their previous essays?

Supposedly if an essay is plagiarized the adcom can usually (sometimes) tell.

they could use a program to check, like turnitin.com ... something similar to that.

basically, i have no clue.

My friend did a stupid thing :( he in a way plagiarized an essay online. If he doesnt get caught now hes just wondering if its possible to be caught later on.

Keep in mind that in most colleges, all decisions are argued in a committee table with the dean of admissions present. If they read several applicants, they may well recognize your essay as sounding familiar. Of course, this risk is only present if the previous application got to this final stage, but if it didn't, it's probably of no use to you.

no but what hes worried about is if he is accepted and is attending college and some applicant does a similar thing and uses the similar essay, whether they will go back and be able to check that it is his.

I can never understand why anyone would plagriarize a college app essay. A history essay? Yes(says with compassion). I used to do that very often in middle school and 9th grade. But a college essay?? How can the work of someone else ever fit into your "profile"? I don't have great stats or heartrending essays, but I personally believe that my essays fit perfectly with the rest of my application.
