Plagiarism???

A guy from my school has gotten hold of an essay which was accepted at the same college he is applying to. Now, he plans to send the same essay as HIS without even breaking a sweat on it.
While I am going thru the ordeal of writing the perfect essay, he already has a readymade one, and it kinda ****es me off.
Dont the adcoms check these essays to find if they are plagiarised or not???
Coz if they dont, why shud I not do the same.

WOAH, that is not a good idea...I don't know how they check, or if they do, but the consequences of him getting caught are WAY too severe to even THINK about it. What if one of the admissions people recognizes it? Also, the essay might not have been what got the original candidate in in the first place, it might have been just a mediocre essay. Work hard on your essay, plus, it shows who you really are. Don't risk it.

It's a really risky idea considering it's usually the same people reading the essays every year.

If he's turning it in online, there are tools to check for plagiarism. For example, turnitin.com. My school uses it.

I don't think he'll get caught. Some colleges have 20,000 applicants per year, which is like 60,000 essays per year. There's no way anyone's going to remember, especially if it wasn't just last year.

He has one from last year but even if thats the case, i dont think any adcome member will remember last year's essay unless it was exceptional. And moreover, there are 4/5 ppl checking them essays so chances of the same person getting the essay is also less.

So, i am starting to think if I shud really do the same. Sorry but "getting into college" seems more imp. than ethics at the moment. :(

What works for someone else might not work for you. For example, you could talk about your amazing biology research but you scored 600 on the biology SAT II (whereas your friend who wrote the essay score an 800).

Now I know this is a mediocre example at best, but what I'm trying to say is it is unlikely that you share the same interests and motivations as any other individual. In that sense, a great essay for him might be a lousy essay for you.

(By the way, not to mention everything that is ethically WRONG with turning in someone else's essays!!!)

Hey, maybe you'll get lucky and get an adcom that "cheats" - you know, just rejects or accepts kids without really reading their applications.

Or maybe you should do your job and learn to write an essay. This is college, you know.

"Sorry but "getting into college" seems more imp. than ethics at the moment."

Honestly? This is a stupid viewpoint...write your own essay, it's really not worth it. The essay won't make or break you as a candidate.

Barney, no offense, but I can't believe you would even consider this. For one thing, your SAT Writing, Cr scores could be DEFINITELY less than the caliber of this essay you're planning to steal. So could your English grades.

Secondly, where would you get an essay that works with this college that isn't the same as the one your classmate stole? Like others said, what works for one, might not work for you.

And thirdly...bad ethics. It'll set a bad tone for your college "career" and you ARE suppose to learn how to write your own essay and WORK before you go off to college.

Don't slack off. Be yourself and if you don't get in, that's too bad but it doesn't mean it was your essay.

Getting into college should be more important than ethics. And if you DO get caught, imagine the disappointment you'll face from teachers, counselor and your parents. Not to mention the bad reputation your school will get.

Scandal, anybody?

THANK YOU IZZY. It's not just me. Barney, you'll be making a huge mistake. Don't do it.

Welcome. :)

If you think stealing an essay is an okay thing to do then you don't even deserve to go to college.

dont be so offensive to the guy for i knwo why a feeling is there.

The thing is if u choose to copy some1 else's essay u never would know if itwas gud and worked really......

secondly if teh other factor suggest a diff person that u are not in the essay u may be in for some trouble.

Also the essay shud reflect a real you, what other chance u have to show that u realy deserve to be the best and get the best ........

sorry for my horrible language and typos here .......... did not see and time went over 20 mins

There are these things called Ethics and Honesty and Self Esteem. Even if the odds of being caught are low the fact that you did anything like that would definately hurt you for a long time. Besides, smartmind's right- a great essay isn't about someone else but about you lol. I would laugh if he sent an essay about how good he was at cricket when he only listed soccer on his activities list ;)

Yep...that kind of inconsistency is noticeable!

And I apologize for seeming to be so offensive, but honestly...even if the thought of getting into the "right" college is overwhelming, you're cheating somebody else by stealing THEIR essay. Oh, you might think "Hey, actually, think of it as a compliment to their essay-writing skills! I'm so confident it'll work again!" but really...be decent. And be your own person.
