okay SO. i'm about to be a senior at a public school in maryland and i don't know where to apply! i'd really love some help.

I want the school to be competitive and reputable. Preferably beautiful, old buildings, green lawns, lots of space, but its not a deal breaker.

Okay stats..

Gpa: 3.6 unweighted, 4.0 weighted.
AP scores: AP gov:3 AP English:4 AP US History:4

SAT Scores: 2010 overall.
Critical Reading: 740

Math: 590 (ugh.)
I AM RETAKING THE SAT IN SEPTEMBER, THAT MATH SCORE WILL GO UP.
i'm determined.

Subject Tests:
US History: 690
English Lit: 640
Math 1: 590
I AM MOST DEFINITELY RETAKING MATH IN OCTOBER AND PROBABLY ENGLISH.

I'm going to take 4 AP's my senior year: AP bio, english, european history, and calc.

This summer I'm interning with the Mayor of my city and also with the office of the Public Defender. I'm planning to study public policy, polisci, or law.
I also have a job as a store model (hollister).
I'm a Red Cross volunteer, have been a girl scout for 6 years, and i'm very active in community volunteering.

I'm in NHS, have gotten various academic achievement awards.
JV soccer for two years, JSA (political awareness group) for 2 years, Latin Club for two years.

Thats about it.

PLEASE give me suggestions, they will be GREATLY APPRECIATED !!!
=]

Hmm well there are a million things that can go into college selection that I don't know if you prefer or not..... So, I'm just going to throw some random ones out there

Reaches: Columbia (big big reach), Georgetown, UNC, UMichigan
Matches: George Washington, Tulane, UMiami, UMD

This is tough... maybe you can give us a little more information on what you'd like in a school (size, location, student life, etc).

Thank you both! It's funny that you both say GW because i have seriously considered it.. the only drawback is it's not the "classic" college i imagine, since it's right in the city.

Hmm well i want to be somewhere pretty.. think buildings like kenyon college.. but not out in the middle of no where.

no all girls schools and no "stone cold sober schools" !! =]

I don't have much of a preference in location, i'm willing to consider going farther away for college.

I forget the stats for Elon, but thats in N.C. and you might want to give it a look. Has the beautiful campus you are seeking, too.

A dad I met there who was favorably impressed with Elon said U. of Richmond is just lovely,in a great part of Richmond, VA--but I think it's pretty expensive.

Oh, he also urged me to check out Wofford in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

You need to decide if you have the motivation to study if everyone around you is partying. If you can keep your focus, and you sound pretty motivated right now, by theway, a state school might be for you.

Hope some of this helps.

Oh, you should know that U. rochester, in NY, costs $48,000. The financial aid office is 585-275-3226. I just got off the phone with them. My d is eligible for a national merit award, so I called and that bill would just be reduced by $15,000 to a final cost of $33,000. while I know they give financial aid, she won't qualify, so we aren't looking any further.

This is a big quest. See if you can get one of your parents to help!

lehigh is definetly not just for engineers. also has a very well regarded business school. im sure theyre also decent in everything else, those are just the two disciplines theyre known for.

ill throw some random names out there too:
UMD, UDel, Lehigh, Bucknell, American, Elon, Wake Forest, Penn State, Skidmore, BC, Georgetown, and USC (south carolina)

My stats are similar to yours (lower GPA, higher SAT, no real ECs), and I got rejected at MIT/CMU, waitlisted at JHU, and accepted at WPI/RIT. Use that information how you will.

That said, consider:

WPI (where I'm going 08)
RPI
Case Western
Duke (reach)
Johns Hopkins (reach)
Rice

Take a week to check out some nearby schools. Salisbury is a bit out of the way, but it can be done. First do a practice visit at your local college. Then I suggest Delaware (largish NU), St. Mary's (cheap and good LAC), Gettysburg (rural LAC), Haverford (suburban LAC), and William and Mary (small but good NU).

wow pointoforder- you've got about half my college list right there! haverford, pomona, middlebury, wesleyan, kenyon, bryn mawr, trinity, franklin & marshall.. they've all been on it at one point or another. i'm impressed!

Hm.. very similar stats to what i had.. i'm going to NYU next year. If you get your math SAT section up i think you will have a shot at getting in to NYU.

would be nice to provide ECs to provide a fuller picture.

Defnitely check out U of Delaware. It will surprise you how beautiful the campus is, it has a solid to very good reputation in many departments, and I think your stats would probably qualify you.
