D is really struggling with the above decision. She loves both programs and is having a hard time turning either one down. Right now she is planning on Pre-Med but is not totally sure if that is the route she wants to go. Because she got a partial scholarship to Michigan, it is a little cheaper than TX (OOS at both schools), but not really enough to be a factor. Although UM is probably a little better school overall, Plan II is a wonderful Honors program. She has visited both schools and thinks that both are a perfect fit for her. Although having to chose from two great options isn't bad, it still doesn't make the decision any easier. Any advice anyone might have will be much appreciated.

I would be interested to know what choice you and your daughter made. LSA has a lot more students enrolled than Plan II. Both have outstanding reputations, as you know already. Does your daughter like hot summers, and the generally much warmer climate in Austin, or is she okay with less heat but much more winter weather in Ann Arbor?

In a new ranking of honors programs, LSA is number 1 in a category called overall excellence, and Plan II is number 3. In a comparison of honors factors only–not counting such things as prestigious postgraduate awards (Rhodes, Marshall, and so on), Michigan LSA was number 2 and UT Plan II was, again, number 3.

If your daughter is interested in med school, Michigan is slightly better in biology, and UT Austin is slightly better in chemistry. This is really a tough choice, isn’t it, but a good tough choice to have. If you come back to the post, it would be interesting to know which one you picked, and why.

In any case, best wishes to you and your daughter!

Either one your D chooses will be a great school for her. UM and UT have many similarities and I am not surprised she likes both. Austin is a lovely city and so is Ann Arbor. Climate as mentioned above is something to consider. My H was born and raised in the Northwest. He has been in Texas since the 80s and there is no way he would want to move back because of the winter. Transportation- Which school is easier to get to from the airport? Is there a big traveling cost difference between the two? Future location of job market- Where she wants to go after graduation?

Best of luck to your D.

Just realized this thread is from last year. It looks like OP’s D chose UM-LSA Honors.
