I have the same Q re: VOST...
Is it reasonable to "walk on" as someone with little or no prior sailing experience? It would be unreasonable to think that someone who had never played lacrosse could show up and make even the club-level lax team ( same goes for ice hockey, baseball, basketball, etc.). Is VOST (or the intercollegiate sailing team) similar?

I've been in contact with the dive coach at USNA and he decided to put me on the team even though I'm not spectacular just because there are only two girls on the team this year and one will be graduating in May. The other will be 1/c next year, so they're really looking for divers I guess. Is there anyone who's on the Women's Swim Team here??

From what I've heard from the Ops LT, it does help to have prior experience but not necessary. I think he said about 1/3 of the new members each year have little or no experience prior to coming.

Even if you have NO experience, if you come in and work hard at sailing during Plebe Summer, do sailing as your intramural during PS, and show a real passion for it, they will most likely have a spot for you on the JV team in the fall.

Most plebes go into JVOST in the fall where they sail the Colgate 26s in a few local races and then move up to VOST in the spring for the big races.

My son is hoping to box. Unsure how difficult it is to get into. We were in Annapolis last weekend -- he stayed with the mids and the boxing finals happened to be going on. He's more excited than ever.
