Planning a midwest college tour

Definitely contact the DEPARTMENT....my son's trip to Hilton School at Uni of Houston was arranged by the Dept....they did a great job setting up meetings

Carolyn , since you visited and Laurence U . & Madison is a future visit for us , did you say it takes a student about an hour and a half to get to Laurence U . from Madison airport ??

Did you notice if they had shuttles or daily transport to Madison from Laurence U. for the students ?

Easy, Do you mean do LU students use the Madison airport? They have one in Appleton. Flights go to Chicago, Minneapolis and beyond. (Northwest and United). Maybe I am not understanding.....It takes 10 min approximately to go the Appleton airport from the campus. Now that's great.

The Beloit Admissions Department will arrange for your visit. My S and I spent a day there last March. They arranged for him to take 2 classes and have lunch with some theatre kids while I took a tour and visited the Logan Anthropology Museum. I second the comments about the Beloit Inn --excellent accommadations and a fine restaurant. If S ends up going to Beloit (he was admitted EA) my wife and I are looking forward to staying at the Beloit Inn!

Too bad you already bought your plane tickets. Midway is not the most convenient airport for the route you've mentioned. Figure on 90 minutes from Midway to Evanston (up to 2 hours during rush hour), forty minutes from NU to Lake Forest, 2 to 2.5 hours from Lake Forest to Madison (important- to avoid downtown Milwaukee construction, be sure to take the 894 bypass, which exits on the left!) A little more than an hour will take you from Madison to Beloit.

The trouble spot is getting from Beloit back to Midway. The traffic on this stretch is terrrible for at least half of the day. I would estimate 2.5 to 3 hours; the sad thing is you'll go right past O'Hare airport but must continue another hour or so to Midway. Any chance you could fly out of Rockford?

Flying to and from Midway saved us $400/ticket. I'll deal with the traffic. Would it make more sense to take public transportation from Midway to Evanston?

You can take the El from Midway to downtown, where you would change trains for Evanston. Depending on the time of day, you might have to change again at Howard Street. It can be worth your while if you are arriving at rush hour. You can plan the trip via www.transitchicago.com

If you're interested in Journalism, you should visit the *SCRIPPS SCHOOL OF JOURNALISM * at Ohio University. It is one of the top in the country and you can get there easily from Columbus.

http://www.ohio.edu

If S ends up going to Beloit (he was admitted EA) my wife and I are looking forward to staying at the Beloit Inn!>>

Us too Lantern. If you have any plans to attend the admitted students' day in April, the Inn has some special rates available but you have to book quickly to get them.

And, to whomever asked about Lawrence - it makes sense to fly right into the Appleton airport rather than Madison. You change planes in Chicago (in most cases) to do so. If you're visiting both UW and Lawrence, you might want to compare airfares to both airports. Or, fly into Chicago and drive it.

Places to stay: Madison Concourse Hotel (top of State Street), Hilton (by Lake Monona), Campus Inn (on Langdon by all the frat houses). Also check out UW website: conference center lodging is available for those with campus business: cheapest way to stay on campus. Lowell Center and Friedrich Center. Stay somewhere with parking and walk around town. or you will go crazy trying to park.

Eat at the Tornado Club! My fave restaurant in Madison.

Stroll and shop on State Street.

Check out the Rathskeller in the Union, and imagine how fabulous the terrace is in warmer weather!

Take the tour but visit the Lakeshore Dorms are of campus for a great alternative to the high rise "party" dorms of southeast campus.

My daughter is a freshman at UW and she LOVES it!

If you going to be in Wisconsin it would be almost a sin not to visit Lawrence University, they have a lot to offer and it is not far from your destination. My D said this school has most organized visits out of all schools she visited.
